What is a Noun?
  • a person, place, thing or idea
  • Ex. student, Chicago, spatula, happiness
  • Find the nouns
  • It was a pleasure to meet the president.
  • Fear is in the air.

What is a Pronoun?
  • A word that takes the place of a noun in a
    sentence
  • Ex. He, her, us, somebody, it, mine, them, their,
    yourself
  • Find the pronouns
  • Everybody wants to dance with him.

What is an Article?
  • Articles precede a noun or noun phrase in a
    sentence
  • Ex. a, an, the (thats it!)
  • A dinosaur chased an elephant through the
    playground.

What is an Adjective?
  • A word that modifies (describes) a noun or
    pronoun
  • Ex. spicy, worried, magnificent, French, clever

What is a Verb?
  • An action or state of being word in a sentence
  • Ex. giggle, float, was, used to, stumbled, am
  • Find the verbs
  • Today has been the longest day of my life.

What is an Adverb?
  • A word that modifies (describes) a verb
  • Ex. skillfully, eagerly, quickly
  • Find the adverbs
  • George walked carefully, so he wouldnt
    accidentally wake his mom.

What is a Conjunction?
  • A word that joins two independent clauses
    (sentences) together.
  • FANBOYS for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
  • I need to mail the invitations, but I cant
    decide on the guest list.

What is a Preposition?
  • A word that links nouns, pronouns or phrases to
    other words in a sentence
  • Ex. under, near, behind, after, during, of, to,
    in

What is an Interjection?
  • A word that shows emotion and is not
    grammatically related to the rest of the sentence
  • Wow, I never knew you could break dance.
  • Ouch, that hurt.

  • What or who the sentence is about
  • Hint the subject usually comes before the verb.
  • What is the subject?
  • My dogs played in the water.

  • The part of the sentence that tells something
    about the subject
  • Hint the predicate is the verb and everything
    after it.
  • What is the predicate?
  • My dogs played in the water.
