Jomon (2000-300 B.C.E.) Paleolithic Period. Pottery-making, hunting-gathering, developing agriculture, villages developed. (NOTE There is considerable debate as to who were the 1st Japanese migrants. Some say Yayoi and others the Jomon . The earliest period in Japanese history is called the Jomon Period.)
Yayoi Period (300B.C.E.-300 C.E.) Mesolithic Neolithic Periods. Iron Age. Rice farming, social classes begin to evolve, metal-working is available.
Yamato (539-710 C.E.) Unified state begins with emergence of powerful clan rulers Japan establishes close contacts with mainland Asia. Period of controlled borrowing and Taika Reform. A centralized control system called Ritsoryo System initiated. Buddhism introduced to Japan.
Nara (710-794 C.E.) Buddhism becomes the court religion selective borrowing from Tang China takes place Chinese influence is very high. Gradually Japan Japanizes cultural borrowings. Taika Reforms weakening.
Heian (794-1192 C.E.) Kana syllables developed. Peace is prevalent. Fujiwara family gains control via clever marriages w/imperial family. Elitist court culture and values developed in which great Japanese literature created by Heian women. Fall of Fujiwaras give rise to political infighting and rising militarism. Shoen system replaces Ritsuryo System. Of Note Late 1200s Mongols unsuccessfully invade Japan kamikaze winds!)
Ashikaga (1338-1573 C.E.) Trade with China and domestic production increase. Firearms and Christianity introduced to Japan. (NOTE Next age overlaps with this age. Much like early late Zhou China! There is much political and social upheaval.)
Age of Warring States (1467-1568 C.E.) Period of power struggle amongst feudal (uji) clans. Europeans Christians exiled.
Tokugawa (1603-1868 C.E.) End of Warring Statescentralized feudalism develops, agriculture booms, trade flourishes, towns come about, Kabuki develops.
