Our Nations Government has 3 Branches
  1. Legislative Branch
  2. Executive Branch
  3. Judicial Branch

The main role of each of these branches
  • The main role of all of these branches is
  • To Protect Citizens Rights

What are rights?
  • Protecting your rights means that they want to
    protect your freedoms as an American.

Our Nations Capital
  • Our nations capital is Washington, DC

Our Nations Capitol Building
  • This is the building where all of our elected
    officials work. The President of the United
    States has his offices here.

The Legislative Branch
  • This branch is the Legislative Branch and is also
    called the Congress.
  • This branch has two parts
  • The Senate
  • The House of Representatives

Legislative Branch and Congress are the same
thing!
  • Remember that this branch has two parts

  • The House of Representatives
  • Their main job is to make laws.

The Senate and The House of Representatives
  • The Senate and the House of Representatives can
    each veto each others bills. If a bill passes it
    then becomes a law.

Executive Branch
  • This branch carries out the laws.
  • The President is the head of this branch. He can
    approve or reject the laws made by Congress (the
    Senate and the House of Representatives).

Veto
  • The President as head of the Executive Branch can
    Veto a law presented to him by Congress.
  • Veto means that he will not allow the law to
    pass. It is then considered dead.

  • The president is the head of this branch and he
    is elected to office by the people of the United
    States of America.
  • In our representative democracy he is elected to
    represent the people of our country.

Judicial Branch
  • This branch decides what the law means and also
    whether or not the laws obey the Constitution.
  • The Supreme Court is the head of this branch. It
    is our highest American Court.

Taxes
  • The taxes that citizens and businesses pay help
    to support our branches of government.

Taxes do many things for its Citizens
  • Citizens and businesses pay taxes. These taxes
    help to pay for our military which protects our
    country.

Taxes also pay for our National Park Service.
  • When you visit one of our National Parks
  • remember that tax money helps to support it.

Separation of Power
  • Separation of Power means that the three branches
    of government have different powers and different
    jobs to do. If one branch had too much power, it
    could run the government alone. This would not be
    good!
  • This separation is called checks and balances.
    It means that they help keep each other in check
    and help each other.

responsibilities
  • National Government is responsible for the
    nations defense and controls the military.
  • State and Local Governments work to protect the
    citizens of their state, city or town. They
    protect our rights.
  • Separation of Power helps the government to
    protect our rights better.

    our country and run the military.
  • The State Governments have more control over
    schools than the National Government.

  • This is the Washington

  • feet tall.

Significance of Washington Monument
  • The Washington Monument is near the west end of
    the National Mall in Washington, D.C., built to
    commemorate the first U.S. president, General
    George Washington. The monument, made of marble,
    granite, and sandstone, is both the world's
    tallest stone structure and the world's tallest
    obelisk in height standing 555 feet 5? inches
    (169.294 m).
