Title: Happy Trails To You
1Happy Trails To You
2Roy Rogers Dale Evans
- Their theme song was Happy Trails
- The US has no King
- But our nation has often chosen people to be the
King of certain things - Elvis Presley was the King of Rock
- Kitty Wells was Queen of Country
- In 1943, Republic Studios declared
- Roy Rogers was the King of Cowboys
3Roy Rogers King of Country
- From Duck Run, Ohio
- It was a marketing ploy but it worked
- Trigger was the smartest horse in the Movies
- Roy shot the straightest and rode the fastest on
Trigger - Roy was invincible whipping four men at one
time or some other great feat
4Roy Rogers King of Country
- He always fought cleanly even though the others
did not - He was loved by Dale Evans and everyone thought
he was special - Over half the population of the US saw his six
movies a year - He was in all the big parades with Dale Evans
and Trigger
5Could all this be true to life
- Was the west really a magical place
- Did everything always turn out right
- Were the good guys always rewarded
- Did the bad guys always get what they deserved
- America wanted heros
- Everyone needed to believe that things would
always turn out alright
6The Real Truth Is
- Things are often not the way they are portrayed
- But Roy and Dale tried so hard to live the kind
of life they appeared to live - Dale would tell her children Your life is the
only Bible some people will read - If our own parents were not good examples, we
had Roy and Dale
7They taught us how to
- Shoot straight
- Ride smooth
- Make a sling shot out of a tree branch
- How to be brave when scared
- How to be a good guy while dealing with all
manner of bad hombres - Everyone could just tell that Roy and Dale were
so in love with each other
8Is there anything we can learn?
- First he was born Leonard Franklin Slye
(November 5, 1911 July 6, 1998 - Dale Evans was his third wife
- Trigger was his Palomino horse
- Bullet was his German Shepherd Dog,
- He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the present
site of Riverfront stadium - He was a town boy, and got tired of that and
built a house boat and went up the Ohio River
toward Portsmouth
9Is there anything we can learn?
- They later moved to Duck Run and bought a farm
but could not make a living on it so Leonards
dad went to work in a shoe factory. - His gift to his son was a horse and he learned
to ride and be a cowboy - He went to school but had to quit and work to
make a living and tried to go to night school but
always fell asleep
10Not such a glamorous life
- Rogers older sister Mary went to California
and the family visited and later moved there - After hitting on hard times and working as a
day laborer he decided to move to L A and pursue
a music career - Sons of the Pioneers was created and Cool
Water and Tumbling Tumblingweeds were big
hits - He got into movies and hit it big in 40s
11What does all this teach us today
- To many people live in a fairy tale world
- There is fiction and reality
- Even many that appear true blue are often made
to appear that way - It is not really who they are or what they are,
it is called spin - It is used in politics every day
- People are way to gullible today
12We need to use great careto distinguish truth
from fable
- John 1838 Pilate said to Him, "What is truth ?"
And when he had said this, he went out again to
the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in
Him at all. - John 1837 Jesus answered, "You say rightly that
I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for
this cause I have come into the world, that I
should bear witness to the truth . Everyone who
is of the truth hears My voice."
13Paul encouraged a young minister named Timothy
- 2 Tim 43-5 For the time will come when they
will not endure sound doctrine, but according to
their own desires, because they have itching
ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers
4 and they will turn their ears away from the
truth , and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you
be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do
the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
14Paul encouraged a young minister named Timothy
- 2 Tim 41-3 I charge you therefore before God
and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the
living and the dead at His appearing and His
kingdom 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season
and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with
all longsuffering and teaching.
15Titus had to be careful because of error being
taught around him
- Titus 114 For there are many insubordinate,
both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those
of the circumcision, 11 whose mouths must be
stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching
things which they ought not, for the sake of
dishonest gain. 12 One of them, a prophet of
their own, said, "Cretans are always liars, evil
beasts, lazy gluttons." 13 This testimony is
true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they
may be sound in the faith, 14 not giving heed to
Jewish fables and commandments of men who turn
from the truth .
16The wise man has to have understanding about
truth error
- James 313-17 Who is wise and understanding
among you? Let him show by good conduct that his
works are done in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But
if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your
hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth .
15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but
is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy
and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil
thing are there.
17Bring back the wanderer !
- James 519-20 Brethren, if anyone among you
wanders from the truth , and someone turns him
back, 20 let him know that he who turns a sinner
from the error of his way will save a soul from
death and cover a multitude of sins.
