AIRSIDE PAVEMENT LIGHTS
  • Aerodrome Beacon- Is a large rotating white/green
light mounted on top of control tower. It
provides visual identification of airports to
    aircraft
  • Edge lights for aircraft Movement
  • Blue lights Are used along the edge of the
    aprons and taxiways
  • White lights- Are used along the edges of the
    runways
  • Two sided lights Half red and half green are

QUESTIONS?
16
AIRSIDE PAVEMENT SIGNS
  • Maneuvering area signs
  • Are intended for use and guidance of aircraft.
They are also of value to vehicle operators to
identify areas they should not enter or as guides
to vehicle operators while in the maneuvering
    area.
  • These signs are mandatory Instructions with
white letters/numbers on a red background.

17
Contd
  • Hold sign Used in conjunction with hold lines
  • Run Way designator signs- when this sign is red
and used alone, they carry a combined message to
hold clear and the runway heading is as
    indicated in the sign
  • Directional Sign Normally has an arrow
indicating the direction of travel to exits,
aprons, terminal buildings or other facilities
  • Informational signs Provide information of
interest primarily to aircraft but which may also
be used to vehicle operators as a reference point.

18
Contd
  • Designator Signs like street signs, identifies
the names of runways by numbers and taxiways by
letters. Taxiways are referred to by using
phonetic alphabet so that taxiway A is spoken
as Taxiway Alpha etc and that a vehicle may not
enter a taxiway without a prior approval of
    control tower.

QUESTIONS?
  • Thank You!

22
VEHICLE BREAK DOWN
  • Break down, poor performance of equipment are
reported by operators and drivers by means of
fault reporting form which together with the
equipment are taken (if equipment is mobile) to
the workshop shift team leader or supervisor.
  • The operator shall report the break down to the
duty manager who will compile all the break down
    in the equipment defect reports.
  • If the equipment is immobile, then the
maintenance team shall put an unserviceable tag
    on the equipment.

23
TOWING RULES
  • Trains of dollies and carts tend to drift in or
reduce the turn radius during maneuvering and
    turning.
  • Therefore to prevent damage to aircrafts,
vehicles, other equipment, or injury to
personnel, the driver must not make sharp turns
around an obstacle immediately after passing.
  • Drivers of GSE that is being towed to a position
at or near the aircraft shall approach the
aircraft on a path parallel to the aircraft
fuselage and the equipment shall be parked in the
    parallel position.

24
Towing rules Contd
  • Pallet trailers and or container trailers must
not exceed 3 dolly trailers with/without loaded
    units.
  • The more the trailers, the more it becomes
    difficult to maneuver
  • Drivers have to ensure that all trailers are
securely attached to the prime move/tug and
    trailer.
  • No Vehicle shall be towed by another vehicle
unless a suitable tow bar is used

25
Towing rules Contd
  • Drivers have to ensure that loads are completely
secure before moving off so that nothing can fall
off or be detached to avoid injury or damage to
personnel or vehicle in the vicinity.
  • When moving trail of ULDs drivers must ensure
that container flaps and doors are secured and
that trailer webbing straps are firmly attached
    before moving off.
  • In case of equipment being used in carrying cargo
fails, tow it to the nearest loading area and
    rectify the fault.
