Title: Photo ethics in a digital world

1
Photo ethics in a digital world
  • Mrs. Verpooten
  • Ms. Wadycki

2
Ethics
  • The National Press Photographers Association says
that editing should maintain the integrity of
the photographic images' content and context. Do
not manipulate images or add or alter sound in
any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent
    subjects.

3
Photo Illustrations
  • Computer art that begins with a digitized
photograph. Using image enhancement software, the
artist can then apply a variety of special
effects to transform the photo into a work of
    art.

7
  • Any time a photo is manipulated beyond reasonable
standards, it becomes known as a photo
illustration and must be labeled that way.

The Cat is OK!
  • The cat was asleep for this illustration. Dont
    worryits ok.

10
Ethics
  • Sometimes, photographers go too far in their
    editing.
  • This is just as bad as making up quotes or people
    for a story.
  • Often, photographers do this to get the best
photo they can to tell a story.

11
The LA Times published this photo by Brian
Walski in March of 2003.
12
The photo outraged readers who thought a soldier
shouldnt hold a gun to a baby and father.
13
But it was fake.
14
Notice the man on the left. You can see his back
again on the right of the soldiers knee.
15
The photographer combined this image of the
soldier raising a gun
16
With this photo of him talking to the father.
17
He was fired.

Time gets busted, too!
  • Both covers ran OJ Simpsons mug shot from when
    he was booked in jail.
  • Obviously, Time altered the photo.
  • The photographer
  • that manipulated it
  • said he "wanted to
  • make it more artful,
  • more compelling."

22
Art vs. Journalism
  • So where does journalism end and art begin?
  • Its a hazy line.
  • Here are some examples from people who couldnt
tell how far was too far.

23
Pyramids?
  • This photographer actually moved a pyramid.
  • They were further apart, but he wanted his
horizontal image to fit on the vertical cover.

24
Kent State University
25
Kent State University
26
Kent State University
  • May 1970 Pulitzer Prize-winning photo by John
Filo shows Mary Ann Vecchio screaming as she
kneels over the body of student Jeffrey Miller at
Kent State University on May 4, 1970 -- after
being fired upon by National Guardsmen.
  • They removed the pole from behind her head!

27
See Anything Different?
28
UW-Madison
  • They added the African America student into the
    crowd to show more diversity.

35
Kate?
  • This GQ cover of Kate Winslett led the Titanic
star to make a public statement about the way it
    was retouched.

36
Kate Winslett?
"The retouching is excessive. I do not look like
that and more importantly I don't desire to look
like that," she said. "I actually have a Polaroid
that the photographer gave me on the day of the
shoot I can tell you they've reduced the size of
my legs by about a third. For my money it looks
pretty good the way it was taken."
37
Julia Roberts
  • "Based on her hairstyle, her head comes from the
    January 2002 People's Choice Awards," said a
source close to Roberts. "Her body seems to be
from the premiere of 'Notting Hill'" - which
opened in London in April 1999, when the actress
wore the glittery red dress shown.

38
Julia Roberts
  • Julias reps said that while most people wouldnt
mind seeing themselves four years ago, Julia did.
  • Plus, they didnt even do a good job, they said.
Her normally swan like neck looks squat and
    stubby.

39
Katie Couric and CBS
40
Katie Couric and CBS
  • The photo alteration was done by someone in the
CBS photo department who "got a little zealous."
  • Katie Couric told the Daily News, I liked the
first picture better because there's more of me
    to love."
