GAS TEST LEVEL II

LEVEL II CONFINED SPACES
3
Definition of Confined Space
Any Space With Difficult Access/Egress,Which has
the potential to cause you harm
4
POTENTIAL HAZARDS IN CONFINED SPACES
  • TOXIC OR FLAMMABLE GASES
  • LOW OXYGEN CONTENT
  • ROTATING OR MOVING EQUIPMENT NOT ISOLATED
  • FLUID OR GAS INLETS OR OUTLETS NOT ISOLATED
  • RESIDUE FROM PREVIOUS CONTENTS
  • SLIP TRIP OR FALL HAZARDS
  • LACK OF ADEQUATE LIGHTING

5
DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES
- Concentrations of gases or vapours can arise
from sources both inside and outside confined
spaces. Some examples are
6
DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES
  • - Some examples are
  • Gas or vapour remaining from a process which
has previously been carried out in the confined
    space.

7
OXYGEN
  • Oxygen content may be low or absent due to a
    variety of reasons
  • Purging with Inert Gas such as nitrogen
  • Displacement by other gases from adjoining plant
    area
  • Depletion due to oxidation ( rusting ) of metals
  • Depletion due to fire or welding / cutting
    process

Low Oxygen remains as the single
biggest hazard in Confined Spaces
8
DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES
- Gas or vapour from adjoining plant due to
ineffective isolation.
9
DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES
Fumes emitted when sludge deposits are
disturbed during inspection / cleaning.
10
DANGEROUS CIRCUMSTANCES
  • - Fumes produced by an operation inside a
confined space, eg welding, flame cutting, lead
lining, rubber lining, brush and spray
painting, moulding GRP (fibreglass), use of
    adhesives, solvents , etc.
  • The production or combustion of various fuels.

11
TESTING CONFINED SPACES
- The tests should check for the presence of gas
or toxic fumes and the adequacy of the supply and
content of Oxygen.
12
MSA ORION MULTI-HEAD GAS MONITOR

TESTING CONFINED SPACES
L.E.L - 0 C0 - 0 PPM H2S - 0 PPM 02

NOTE An acceptable result must be obtained
before work in any area proceeds.

15
Before any work can be allowed to commence in
an enclosed space, the following conditions must
be met L.E.L. - less than 1 Oxygen - more
than 20 H2S - less than 1 ppm. Carbon Monoxide
- less than 1 ppm
16
LEARN THIS! IMPORTANT!
20
Upper Explosive Limit
Too Rich
15
Explosive
Methane (CH4) IN Air
Envelope
(Explosive Range)

CHECK YOUR PERMIT!
18
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
1 N.B. Ensure Enclosed Space Entry Permit is
Active and all information is correct.
19
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
2 Ensure all Permit Conditions are adhered too.
20
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
7 Ensure all Electrical equipment is
disconnected (Tag Lock out proc)
21
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
8 Ensure Safe Access and Egress Scaffolding
/Platforms / Ladders etc
22
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
9 UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE DO NOT PLACE YOUR
HEAD OR BODY INSIDE OR OVER MANWAY DOORS OR
HATCHES H2S PRECAUTIONS
23
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
11 Inform C.C.R prior to entry. Radio /
Telephone Check
24
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
14 If possible, keep in sight or verbal contact
with Standby Personnel
25
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
16 When work is complete, withdraw slowly and
carefully.
26
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
17 When Exit complete, and clear of immediate
area. INFORM C.C.R.
27
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
18 Clear area and Make Safe
28
ENCLOSED SPACE ENTRY PROCEDURE
19 Sign Off any Permits /Certificates etc.
29
NEVER MAKE ASSUMPTIONS - ALWAYS CHECK AND IF
DOUBT - CHECK AGAIN.
30
Respirators, Dust masks, SCBA or Escape Sets
Know which to use!
Know where to use!
Know how to use!
Dust and Vapours AND Gases! B/A Trained Personnel
use only!!
31
Important NEVER USE RESPIRATORS FOR CONFINED
SPACE
32
A CARTRIDGE TYPE RESPIRATOR WILL PROTECT YOU
AGAINST CERTAIN ATMOSPHERIC HAZARDS BUT DOES NOT
SUPPLY YOU WITH OXYGEN. REMEMBER, LOW OXYGEN IS
THE BIGGEST KILLER OF CONFINED SPACE ENTRANTS
33
THIS MASK CANNOT BE USED FOR CONFINED SPACE ENTRY
!!!!
34
Escape Only ! NOT for Confined Space Entry or
Rescue
