NYSRA Charlotte Award
  • NYSRA Charlotte Award Goal
  • To encourage children to read and appreciate fine
    literature
  • Biennial award for childrens literature
  • Students vote for their favorite books from
    ballots created by the NYSRA Charlotte award
    committee.
  • In 2008, over 11,000 votes were counted for
    students favorites.
  • Authors and illustrators are honored at the
    annual NYSRA conference.

Book Selection Process
  • Committee members are selected by the chair and
    NYSRA board to reflect the diversity of our
    membership with the goal of having
    representatives across the state
  • Hundreds of books are submitted to the 10 person
    committee
  • Books are read and discussed by the committee and
    NY teachers and students as the ballot is being
    created

Ballot Book considerations
  • Published within the 2 year time frame of the
    award
  • Represent the diverse lives of NY students
  • Include both male and female protagonists
  • Balance genres non-fiction, realistic fiction,
    historical fiction, biography, adventure, science
    fiction, poetry, humor, and more
  • Include high quality text and illustrations
  • Balance picture books as well as novels for
    intermediate and young adult categories
  • Note books written by New York authors
  • Emphasize books that will appeal to children

Vote by April 15!
  • VOTING REQUIREMENTS
  • Students may have the books read to them or read
    the books on their own to become a qualified
    voter
  • Students are encouraged to read all titles in a
    category, but it is not a requirement. Students
    may read books in more than one category.
  • Each reader is entitled to one vote in one or
    more categories.
  • An adult in a classroom or library setting must
    monitor voting procedures, and should submit one
    ballot from each participating classroom or
    library that indicates the number of votes for
    each title.

How can kids choice book awards foster reading?
  • READ the ballot books!
  • VISIT the Charlotte Award Youth Book blog for
    resources related to each title on the ballot and
    reviews for the books.
  • USE the books in your schools morning or DEAR
    program.
  • INVITE a member of the Charlotte Award Selection
    Committee to come to your school to talk about
    the books and the ballot process.
  • DISPLAY the books in a special spot in the
    library tally the votes on a display chart.
  • START a Charlotte Award Club for students
    and/or teachers.
  • ASK your parent/teacher organization to help
    purchase the books.
  • USE the titles in your PARP program or hold a
    Charlotte Award family event.
  • HAVE older students read the books aloud to
    younger ones.
  • CREATE a Charlotte Award shelf in the library
    with past winners
  • INVOLVE your community library, bookstore,
    pre-schools, senior citizens, LOCAL READING
