1Treatment of hypoglycaemia
Hypoglycaemia less than 4 mmol/l
Unconsciousness Place in recovery position. Seek
medical assistance
Confused or semi-conscious, but still able to
swallow
Treat with Hypostop Apply between gums and
cheeks. Rub cheeks to ensure absorption.
Patient on Insulin Therapy ONLY
Patient on Diabetes tablets (and / or
insulin) e.g. suplonylureas (gliclazide,
glibenclamide)
Glucagon 1mg sc/im or 50ml IV 20 dextrose
If not responding, refer to Unconsciousness
(red)
50 100ml/hr IV 10 dextrose continuous infusion
If not responding, repeat the above.
Follow up with starchy carbohydrate e.g a
meal (if being served imminently) or
toast, cereal, 2 biscuits, banana, a glass of
milk or ½ carton Fortisip
- Identify cause lack of food (CHO) / missed
meal, mismatch of food and insulin - Re-educate as needed
- Take steps to avoid hypoglycaemia review dose
of insulin / sulphonylureas - Discuss with the diabetes team
