Title: Using High Speed Interconnects with Oracle RDBMS

1
Using High Speed Interconnects with Oracle RDBMS
  • Sumanta.Chatterjee_at_oracle.com

2
Requirements Application
  • A low overhead, low latency, high bandwidth,
ultra reliable, supportable, IPC I/O protocols.
  • Must match existing IPC models for RAC
    communication
  • Must match Oracle I/O models for RAC
  • Optimized for transfers from 200 bytes to 8 MB
  • High data volumes over interconnect
  • Large compute and storage server node counts

3
Asked and Got for IPC
  • Support for a reliable datagram IPC in OpenIB
  • Based on Socket API
  • Minimal code change / testing for Oracle
  • Failover inter HCA and intra HCA ports
  • Runs over IB, Ethernet, iWARP, etc.

4
Asked and got for I/O
  • SRP
  • iSCSI
  • Issues
  • Limited burn-in cycles
  • Concern over operability with PowerPath
  • Management and Discovery
  • Need a cohesive message from OFED

5
Todays Status
  • RDS v2 is in OFED 1.2
  • Code maintainers are Oracle Open Source Group and
    Mellanox
  • Certification with IB underway at CISCO
  • Initial trials look very encouraging
  • Limited Performance test so far
  • Limited Stress test so far
  • Expect to support RDS from OFED with Oracle 11G
  • Certification over 10 Gbit Ethernet has
    started???

6
RDS Interoperability
  • Very important need RDS interoperability across
    platforms.
  • Options
  • Port OFED RDS
  • Provide RDS driver which interoperates at wire
    protocol levels
  • Working on RDS V3 specification
  • Add z-copy (directed) operations
  • Future we will require RDS V3 certification
    from all partners
  • This is an attractive interconnect solution

7
Unified Fabric
  • Cannot overstress the importance of unified
fabric for all types of I/O operations
  • Its all about cost effectiveness
  • Large node counts, many cores per node poses much
    higher I/O demands

8
Virtualization
  • Inefficient use of MIPS driving consolidation
  • Virtualization makes provisioning easy, improves
    MIPS utilization.
  • Will drive up I/O demands per node
  • Again a perfect playground for Infiniband
  • To do
  • Test solutions available for I/O virtualization

9
Hopeful signs
  • Efficiency of using IB for interconnect and I/O
traffic is no longer a debate
  • Lots of interests from many business sectors
  • Data can speak for itself
  • Lets do more real case presentations
  • Oracle Open World Nov 11 15, 2007
