4Syllabus/Class Description
- Students will learn the basic hand-building
techniques to create three-dimensional art from
clay. - Students will have the opportunity to experience
the basic techniques of Wheel Throwing. - Students will demonstrate the proper use of the
basic techniques of trimming, glazing and
decorating a finished work of ceramic art.
5Class Rule 1 - RESPECT
- Present yourself as a willing and eager student
everyday
- Treat others as you would like to be
treated-Golden Rule
- Address teacher in respectful manner and tone
- Take care of all equipment as if it belongs to
you.
6Class Rule 2- RESPONSIBILITY
- What you do is about you. No one makes you do
anything.
- You get credit for what you do and what you turn
in.
- Your area, your mess. Common area, still your
mess.

9REQUIRED MATERIALS
- TWO Pencils
- A Folder with 2 pockets
- To be graded on Friday, January 14th!!
- Worth 100 POINTS!
- 50 points for the Folder
- 25 points for each pencil
- NOW THAT IS EASY POINTS!!!
10SUPPLIED MATERIALS
- TWO Plastic Bags labeled with your drawer number
for storing clay
- A plastic cup labeled with your drawer number
To be returned at the end of the semester!! What
do you do when they are missing?? Check the
Lost and Found boxes!!!!
11STUDIO PROCEDURES
- Each day you should take out your drawer from the
class cabinet and store it in your table.
- Next step is to read the Daily Objectives on the
board. This is a daily checklist, do them in
order!!!!

- ALL students should maintain an organized folder
with ALL paperwork, direction and idea sheets to
be graded at the end of the quarter worth 100
points.

- Students will complete an Idea Sheet before clay
will be given out. STEP 1 in the Creation of
Ceramic Pottery. - THIS is your PLAN for the project you wish to
make!

- Students are responsible for maintaining the
moisture of their clay to keep it workable. - Clay NEVER goes in the garbage. ALL clay is
RECYCLABLE.

- STEP 6 - After creating a project the student
will dry it using the Drying Cabinet. - STEP 7- The student will be responsible for
placing a dried project on the Firing cart for a
Bisque Firing which is ALWAYS scheduled on
Mondays.

- Once fired, the projects will be moved to the
Bisque cart by the teacher. - STEP 8 - Students will be responsible for glazing
the pot and placing on the Firing cart for a
Glaze Firing which is ALWAYS scheduled on
Thursdays.

- NO WORK will be fired unless clearly marked with
a students signature mark on the bottom of the
project. - Work deemed improperly done will be placed on the
Rejection Cart for the students to claim and
repair or finish.

- STEP 9 - Students will be responsible for
completing the Idea Sheet, writing a 4 Step
critique and placing on the Grading table.

- Grades are posted in class cabinet. Check them

- Written assignments may be turned in late for
partial credit. Better late then a ZERO!!!!

- Each Table will share a set of tools and they
will be marked with the table and kept in the
tool drawer in the tool cabinet.
- Each table should return the tool drawer each day.

29GLAZES
- Each student must have a Glaze Flow Fee
permission slip on file before they may use any
glaze. - Students may use any color glaze they wish.
- Students are responsible for keeping glazes clean
and free of impurities to insure the quality of
the color. Damaging glazes will result in the
student paying for the replacement of that glaze.

- Small Mistake 4.00 fee
- Medium Mistake 8.00 fee
- Large Mistake 10.00 and the shelf is now
yours!!!!
- THIS MUST BE RETURNED TO MR.SHIPLEY BEFORE ANY
GLAZE MAY USED BY THE STUDENT FOR THIS CLASS.
31GLAZES
- Please wash all brushes before glazing as a
precaution. - All brushes must be return properly and not left
in the sink.
32CLEAN-UP
- Students are responsible for cleaning up all area
in which the work everyday. - Students will be given the last ten minutes of
class for clean-up. - No passes during clean-up time. No passes will
be given for students who clean-up late. - Failure to clean-up properly will result in the
student being suspended from using clay or glaze
until a Clean-Up appointment is fulfilled after
school or during lunch. - Students will remain in their seats until the
bell rings.
33ATTENDANCE
- Attendance is critical for success in this class.
A daily participation grade will be factored
into your quarter grade. - Poor attendance CAN cause failure if it becomes
excessive. - Parents will be notified when absences/tardies
accrue and a referral may be sent to
Counselor/Dean for disciplinary action, up to 3
notices a quarter. - NO PASSES will be given for Tardy students to use
the restroom or leave the room for any reason. - Absent student can view the Daily Objectives at

34ATTENDANCE
- ALL Excused absences should be made up on the
next day student is in class or during their
lunch period or after school by appointment. - Excused means cleared through the attendance
office by a parent or the administration. - Unexcused means not cleared by a parent of the
administration.

THEY HAVE COMPLETED PINCH, COIL AND SLAB

38PROJECT LIST-2nd/4th Quarter
- COMBINATION POT. Youre the Tops Kid. (1 ½ weeks
1 piece) 100 points. - EFFIGY VESSEL. A Box for Burial. (1 ½ weeks 1
piece) 100 points.
39PROJECT LIST-2nd/4th Quarter
- WHEEL THROWING. From Ball to way Tall. (14 weeks
based on effort)100 points. - CHOICE POT. Sky is the Limit. (1 ½ weeks 1
piece) 100 points. - NAMEPLATE. Who AM I? (1 week 1 piece) 50
points. - FINAL EXAM Multiple Choice test with a Written
Essay. 100 points. - Not all projects will be assigned if time does
not permit.
40Reading Assignments
- Students will complete 13 additional reading and
written assignments in class on various aspects
of the class. - All assignments will be done in class with the
provided textbooks, using the book that has the
same number as your drawer. - These assignments may be turned in late for
partial credit but must be done outside of class
time.
41EVALUATION
- Each project will be graded using the following
criteria - Completed on Time __/20 points complete idea
sheet and project - Followed Directions __/20 points followed
direction sheet properly - Neatness __/20 points work done with care and
proper technique - Concept __/20 points execution of methods and
techniques for project - Craftmanship __/20 points creative designs and
good execution of idea
42EVALUATION
- Grades will be done using points.
- Written assignments will range from 25 points to
50 points, clay projects will be worth 100 points
and participation grade will be based upon number
of days in grading period. - A 100 - 90
- B 89 - 80
- C 79 - 70
- D 69 - 60
