5Captain Robert Carter Oakley
- Born in Wimborne 1795.
- He was a 19th Century soldier who documented his
travels through a detailed journal. - He travelled to Ireland, Spain and France and
also guarded the defeated Napoleon. - In 1828 he travelled to India to rejoin his
regiment. He kept a beautifully illustrated
journal of his voyage aboard the Duchess of
Athol. It was a 93 day voyage (3 months) which
was full of incident. - The journal contains illustrations of sharks and
sucking fish - The journal is important as it tells us about the
dangers of crossing the oceans where sailors were
frequently lost overboard or died. - Travelling like this was often long and
dangerous. - Robert died in 1835 aged 40. He is buried in
India.
