THE UNIVERSE
3
DEFINATION OF UNIVERSE
  • Whole cosmic system of matter and energy of which
Earth is a part. Its main constituents are
GALAXIES,within which are stars and stellar
grouping and nebula. The universe is governed by
four fundamental forces the STRONG FORCE,the
    WEAK FORCE,the electromagnetic force, and
GRAVITATION. Numerous theories have been proposed
for the origin and structure of the universe.

4
GALAXY
  • 1. a. Any of numerous large-scale aggregates of
stars, gas, and dust that constitute the
universe, containing an average of 100 billion
(1011) solar masses and ranging in diameter from
    1,500 to 300,000 light-years. Also called nebula.
  • b. often Galaxy The Milky Way.
  • 2. An assembly of brilliant, glamorous, or
distinguished persons or things a galaxy of
    theatrical performers.

5
SOLAR SYSTEM
  • The Solar System was formed about 4,560 million
years ago. It is made up of the eight planets,
their moons, comets and other bodies. These all
orbit around our Sun,to which they are attracted
    by gravity

6
PLANETS
  • MERCURY
  • VENUS
  • EARTH
  • MARS
  • JUPITER
  • SATURN
  • URANUS

MOON
  1. The natural satellite of Earth, visible by
reflection of sunlight and having a slightly
    elliptical orbit, approximately 356,000
kilometers (221,600 miles) distant at perigee and
406,997 kilometers (252,950 miles) at apogee. Its
mean diameter is 3,475 kilometers (2,160 miles),
its mass approximately one eightieth that of
Earth, and its average period of revolution
around Earth 29 days 12 hours 44 minutes
calculated with respect to the sun.
  2. A natural satellite revolving around a planet.
  3. The moon as it appears at a particular time in
its cycle of phases a gibbous moon.
  4. A month, especially a lunar month.
  5. A disk, globe, or crescent resembling the natural
    satellite of Earth.

9
ASTEROID
  • A body smaller than a planet and made of
rock, metal,or other minerals. There is a large
belt of asteroids between Mars and Jupiter.

10
METEORORSHOOTING STAR
  • A chunk of rock or metal that enters EARTHS
atmosphere and burns up in a fiery show.

11
METEORITE
  • A chunk of rock or metal that has fallen to Earth
    from beyond its atmosphere.

12
METEOROID
  • A chunk of rock or metal moving through space.

13
COMET
  • A celestial body, observed only in that part of
its orbit that is relatively close to the sun,
having a head consisting of a solid nucleus
surrounded by a nebulous coma up to 2.4 million
kilometers (1.5 million miles) in diameter and an
elongated curved vapor tail arising from the coma
when sufficiently close to the sun. Comets are
thought to consist chiefly ammonia, methane,
    carbon dioxide,and water.

14
Great Comet
  • The definition of a great comet could obviously
be quite subjective. However, any comet which
becomes bright enough to be noticed by people who
are not actively looking for it and becomes well
known outside the astronomical community may come
to be known as a great comet.

15
HALLEYS COMET
  • A comet with a period of approximately 76 years.
The first comet for which a return was
successfully predicted, it last appeared in 1986.

16
COMET DONATI
  • It was a comet named after the Italian astronomer
Giovanni Battista Donati who first observed it on
June 2, 1858. The comet is considered a
non-periodic comet . After the Great Comet of
1811, it was the most brilliant comet that
appeared in the 19century . It was also the first
comet to be photographed. It was nearest the
    Earth on October 10,1858.
