  • A shortened form of a word is called an
    abbreviation.
  • Initials are a form of abbreviation.
  • Titles used before a persons name as well as the
    names of states and months can be abbreviations.
  • Most but not all abbreviations begin with a
    capital letter and end with a period.
  • If you are unsure about a abbreviation, check a
    dictionary.

  • To save space in addresses and names of
    businesses, you can use abbreviations for some
    words.
  • Periods do not usually appear after abbreviations
    for organizations, and all the letters are
    capitals.
  • The United States Postal Service uses capitalized
    two-letter abbreviation with no period for each
    state.

  • Do not abbreviate the months of May, June, and
    July.
  • Do not capitalize or use periods after
    abbreviations for units of measure. The only
    exception is the abbreviation for inch, which is
    followed by a period.
  • If you use the abbreviation for a unit of
    measure, then you should use a numeral with it.

Numbers
  • When writing sentences, always spell out numbers
    under one hundred.
  • Use numerals for numbers over one hundred except
    for even hundreds.
  • There are eighty-two students present.
  • There are 182 students in my school.
  • There were two hundred students last year.

  • Always spell out a number that begins a sentence.
  • One hundred thirty-five students attended the
    meeting.
  • Spell out expressions of time when you use the
    word oclock. Use numerals, however, when the
    time is followed by A.M. or P.M. or is used alone
    as an exact time.
  • Lets meet at seven oclock.
  • We came at 6 P.M.
  • We took the 215 train.

    writing or lines within the section.
