2
Causes of the Great Depression
  • Multiple Theories
  • Postwar Debts
  • Marxist Economics
  • Stock Market Crash

3
Postwar Debts
  • After World War I, many countries were in debt.
The victors of the First World War needed money
and needed a loan from the United States.

4
Marxist Economics
  • A rise in wages leads people to believe that they
should use fewer resources. Production is lowered
due to profits, which causes unemployment.
Unemployment worsens the level of under
    consumption.

5
Stock Market Crash
  • In 1929, share prices in the stock market dropped
tremendously which set off a chain of
    bankruptcies. The crash shook economics
worldwide, and even affected countries over seas.
The crash is also known as Black Tuesday.

6
International Effects
  • Germany suffered from hyperinflation, which is an
    uncontrollable rise in prices.
  • The United States raised its import duties, as
did other countries. The high taxed reduced world
trade by 62. Asia depended on raw supplies from
    the United States.

7
Life During The Depression
  • Life in the 1930s was unbearable. Many families
were evicted from their homes and moved to the
West Coast in search of work. The migrants were
discriminated by offensive terms such as Okies
    and Arkies.

8
The End Of The Depression
  • In 1935, Roosevelt laid out a plan to stabilize
the U.S. economics called the New Deal. The
First New Deal was self-contradictory, pragmatic,
and experimental. There were three steps on the
road to balance economics Reform, Recovery and
    Relief.
