Title: Problem Wells

1
Problem Wells
2006 International Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop
Houston, Texas
  • Break out Session

2
Problem Well Definition?
  • More that 2 failures per year.
  • What is a Failure?
  • Same type of failure - two in a row.
  • No Fluid in the Tank.
  • There is noticeable Leak w/ fluid on the Ground.
  • Wells Production has decreased.
  • Pumping Unit is not Running.
  • Fluid Level is not at the Pump.
  • System Efficiency is less than 35, Surface
    Efficiency is too low?

3
Worst Problems
  • 4 w/ Gas Interference
  • 2 w/ Gas Wells Pumping Water
  • 2 w/ Oil Wells
  • 5 w/ Rod Cut/ Rod Part/ Rod on Tubing Wear/ holes
    in tubing
  • 2/ Corrosion
  • 2 w/ Sand
  • Deviated Wells
  • Blast Joint

4
Handle Gas in Pumping Wells?
  1. POC with 70 fillage
  2. Continuous Pump many days
  3. 2 hour shut down time
  4. Auto-start gas engine
  5. Down size plunger and flow liquids up casing Pump
    80 BPD flow 130 BPD

5
Handle Gas in Oil Wells?
  1. Dont recognize gas interference
  2. Use LOWIS/case to monitor
  3. Every day View every well/ control
  4. CO2 Flood Casing Frequently Unloads
  5. 30-45 minutes off
  6. Use back pressure valve

6
Handel Sand
  1. Trying Stanley Filter. Good Luck so far.
  2. Other experience is filters plug and tear
  3. 0.003 Pump Clearance
  4. Pump sand with 0.007-0.011
  5. Dont stop and let sand settle out
  6. Rotate pump.
  7. Cavins Desander OK
  8. Grooved Plunger
  9. 0.007-0.008 fit
  10. Long Plunger/short barrel
  11. Grooved Plunger

7
Examples of Problems?
  1. Need work over rigs
  2. Make-up problems causing failures
  3. Use spray metal pull rod
  4. Good Chemical Guy Left
  5. KD rod for corrosion resistance
  6. Use 13 chrome or 3 16 stainless blast joint

8
Identify Problems?
  1. Bad Well 3 failures in 1 year/ 2 per year/ 2 per
    taper/year
  2. Use field wide system for monitoring to ID
    problem.
  3. Need failure meeting every month frequent well
    review.
  4. Record every failure, look at failed component,
decide to do something, set goals, have your own
    pump shop.
  5. Use integrated solution team, ID root cause, use
best practice team, inspect failures, team needs
    rod/ pump/ chemical/ work-over/ company man.
  6. Look at Pump in Shop
  7. Call meeting if 5 failures in one month
