Sandia CFD Transport Code A workshop was
conducted by Dr. Walt Gill from Sandia on the use
of the code at the Fourth Triennial International
Fire Cabin Safety Research Conference held
November 15-18, 2004, in Lisbon, Portugal.
3
Sandia CFD Transport Code Phase 2 validation is
ongoing using experimental data from the flaming
resin block in the 707 cargo compartment. All
suggested modifications to the instrumentation
were implemented before the second round of
validation experiments were conducted. Initial
results indicate the code is predicting
temperatures significantly higher than the
experimental data in the immediate vicinity of
the fire location. The agreement becomes much
better as the distance from the fire increases.
Smoke meter light transmission agreement is very
good. Sandia is developing updates to improve the
agreement and remove minor programming anomalies
in other areas. Validation experiments in the
DC-10 test article using the flaming resin block
have been completed and will be compared to code
predictions following the resolution of the 707
validation work.
4
Sandia CFD Transport Code Initial copies of the
code were distributed to a 10 member users group
in the beginning of December. The group was
requested to provide feedback by April 1, 2005.
The feedback will be compiled and provided to
Sandia shortly after the deadline. A mechanism is
needed to provide funding to Sandia for future
efforts that might be required to support private
industry users of the code. Preliminary
discussions have taken place to determine what
that would entail but a final decision has not
yet been made. Comments are welcome.
