Ombudsman in NREGS WB
  • In general, an "ombudsman" refers to a state
official appointed to provide a check on
government activity in the interests of the
citizen, and to oversee the investigation of
    complaints of improper government activity
against the citizen. If the ombudsman finds a
complaint to be substantiated, the problem may
get rectified, or an ombudsman report is
    published making recommendations for change.
  • Order under Section 27(1) of National Rural
Employment Guarantee Act for establishment of the
office of Ombudsman for redressal of grievances
    in a time bound manner.

8
Ombudsman in NREGS WB
  • Ombudsman will be an agency independent of the
central or state government. He or she will
receive complaints from NREGA workers and others
on any matters and dispose them off or register a
case and even pass an award, which will be final
and no appeal against it will be allowed.
  • In cases of corruption, the ombudsman will refer
it for criminal prosecution. The Ombudsman will
also send monthly and annual reports to state
Chief Secretary and Secretary in charge of NREGA,
which will form part of the annual report to be
    placed before the state legislature.
