Welcome to Mrs. Bains 7th grade English

This year

• We will be focusing on different aspects of
  English in 7th grade (essays, narratives, novels,
  poetry, short stories, persuasionthe list goes
  on!)
• Students are expected to complete homework each
  night it is assigned, and be prepared to
  participate daily in class!
• This class incorporates project-based learning to
  help students gauge and understand the CA State
  ELA Standards
• Here are just a few things we will be covering
  this year

• Taking Sides by Gary Soto
• (A story about Lincoln Mendoza, belonging and
  finding his identity)
• Touching Spirit Bear
• (A story about Cole Matthews, a bear, defiance,
  and finding the road to change attitudes and
  behaviors)

• Monsters on Maple Street
• -5 paragraph Persuasive Letter
• Proposing a script change
• Dark They Were and Golden Eyed
• -Short scary story

Non Fiction

• Titanic
• Timeline of world events vs. life events

Accelerated Reader

• Individualized Reading Program
• Students choose books based on reading level
• Computer reading quizzes after each book (tests
  comprehension)
• AR Point Goals
• 20 minutes of reading every night
• Grade is based on percent correct on tests, and
  if goal is met!

• 7th graders across the state take a state writing
  test
• This year they will be practicing different
  genres of writing, including
• Persuasion
• Response to Literature
• Narrative
• Summary

Other tidbits

• When students are absent, they can retrieve the
  work they missed from the Absent folders
• Students have English folders which contain VIP
  (Very Important Papers) that they will need all
  year (we add papers to this often)
• Writing portfolios will be compiled throughout
  the year
