Fire Classification

• Building codes regulate the type of roofing used
  based on a required level of resistance to flame
  spread and fire penetration as measured by ASTM
  procedure E108.
• Class A severe fire exposure (slate, concrete
  tiles, clay tiles, asphalt shingles,
  built-up/single-ply roofs)
• Class B moderate fire exposure
  (built-up/single-ply, sheet metal roofings,
  composition shingles)
• Class C light fire exposure (fire-retardant
  treated wood shingles and shakes)
• Nonclassified (untreated wood shingles on type
  4B construction such as agriculture buildings,
  accessory buildings and storage sheds).
