• Geckos are lizards
• Lizards are reptiles
• Found on every continent except Antarctica

• Have been around for over 50 million years
• Not wild in Kansas, but are popular as pets
• There are over 18 types of geckos such as Tokay,
  African Fat-Tailed, Golden and Leopard

• Fairly small and VERY fast
• Most are 5-7 inches long
• Males are larger females
• Even pet geckos dont like to be handled and will

• Geckos mostly eat insects and spiders
• Big geckos can eat rodents, birds and even other
  lizards

  from logs and plants
• Regularly drink from standing water
• Also drink nectar and juices from rotten fruit

Habitat Shelter

• Geckos live in habitats that are warm including
  deserts and rainforests
• They live burrows or dens under rocks, in
  crevices and hide in and under almost anything

• Desert geckos stay buried in the sand during the
  day to stay cool and come out at night when the
  temperature is lower
• Geckos are prey for snakes, mammals and birds
• Geckos hide using camouflage
• Some can detach their tail to confuse predators
  and give them time to escape
• They dont have teeth, but will still
• bite!
