  • Plans for Responding to Emergencies

Bioterrorism Response Plan
  • Plan for the management of patients when there is
    a biological type of event. Examples include
    anthrax, botulism, smallpox.
  • Report to your supervisor for instructions.

Code Aster Mass Casualty
  • Large number of patients are expected.
  • Level 1 gt 100 patients
  • Level 2 50-100 patients
  • Level 3 10-50 patients
  • Level 4 5-10 patients
  • Additional treatment areas will be set up if
    necessary.

Code Blue
  • A person is very seriously ill or critically
    injured and and is not breathing and/or heart has
    stopped.
  • Note It includes patients, visitors, employees,
    physicians.

Code Gray
  • A person does not have a serious injury and/or
    illness, however does need medical care. For
    example, the person fell and has a broken wrist.

Code Red
  • Fire, smoke or the smell of something burning.

Code Spill
  • Hazardous Chemical Spill One or more hazardous
    chemicals and/or hazardous medications has been
    spilled that may endanger life, property and/or
    the environment.

Code White
  • Failure of telephones, faxes, pagers, nurse call
    systems, overhead paging and/or radios.
  • There are emergency VHS radios that are available
    to use when other systems have failed.

Code Yellow
  • NBC
  • Nuclear
  • Biological
  • Chemical
  • Decontamination procedures are required of
    patients and possibly of staff.

Emergency Evacuation Plan
  • When there is an immediate threat of danger in an
    area and persons need to evacuate the area.
  • The most senior person on scene has the authority
    to start the evacuation to a safe area.

Planned Evacuation
  • There is NOT an immediate threat to an area and
    there is time to plan the evacuation. For
    example, a hurricane is threatening to harm the
    building.
  • The Emergency Operations Command Center will give
    direction to the departments that need to
    evacuate.

  • There are wall charts and/or desk references that
    will give you the basic instructions of what to

    and follow up actions that you need to take in
    responding to the emergency.
  • Know the location of these charts in your
    department.
