Title: The Triggerfish Lens and Glaucoma Monitoring

1
The Triggerfish Lens and Glaucoma Monitoring
  • By Samuel Karnes

2
Glaucoma
  • Intraocular pressure on the optic nerve
  • Blindness
  • Four types
  • Chronic (open angle)
  • Angle Closure (acute)
  • Congenital
  • Secondary

3
Triggerfish Lens
  • Sensimed AG
  • Strain gauges
  • around the outer edge
  • Micro-processor
  • Antenna
  • Radiofrequency waves
  • Bluetooth

4
Current Glaucoma Tests
  • Tonometry Procedures
  • Eye is numbed with numbing drops
  • Slit-lamp is moved forward until tonometer
    touches the eye
  • Handheld device touches the eye and takes
    pressure reading
  • Pressure is read from change in light reflections
when air hits the eye (Air Puff)
  • Each procedure only reads IOP for a few seconds

5
Advantages
  • 24 hour IOP monitoring
  • Silicon hydrogel (used for regular contact lens)
  • Easy to wear
  • Non-Invasive

6
Disadvantages
  • Not available in U.S. currently
  • Each lens only provides a single use
  • Common adverse effects
  • Eye irritation
  • Blurred vision

7
Testing Results
  • Effective results for 36 of 40 patients
  • 82 blurred vision
  • 80 inflammation and reddening of the eye
  • Symptoms usually went away within 24 hours

8
Conclusion
  • Lens collects more data than current tests
  • Seconds of monitoring vs. hours
  • Long term
  • More accurate diagnoses
  • Better information for finding a possible cure
