4Federal Regulation
- Training must be related to students field of
study - Training is temporary in nature
- Student has been lawfully enrolled on a full-time
basis for at least one academic year - Training is an integral part of an established
curriculum - Student is in legal status
5Employment Requirements
- Student may NOT begin CPT until he/she receives
written authorization - Student may NOT apply for CPT after completion of
study - Student may work full-time during vacation period
but may only work up to 20 hours per week during
the Fall and Winter Semesters - All paperwork must be received by International
Services prior to the beginning date of training
6Student Procedure
- Check with International Services to see if you
qualify for CPT - Obtain a letter from your prospective employer
- Obtain a letter from your Internship Coordinator
- Enroll in an Internship class
- Submit paper work to International Services
7Letter from Prospective Employer
- The firms name and contact information
- The nature of the training
- Whether the position is part-time (20 hrs/wk) or
full-time (more than 20 hrs/wk) - The beginning date (must be a date in the future)
and ending date - The letter must be signed

- Must be a work study, practicum, field program,
internship or co-op education class - Must carry academic credit
- Research and Independent Readings courses do NOT
qualify

- Review entire application
- Review students academic record and file to
ensure legal status - Designated School Official (DSO) authorizes CPT
in SEVIS - New I-20 is printed with CPT authorization on
page 3

- Students who receive one year or more of
full-time curricular practical training (CPT) are
ineligible for - post-completion optional practical training (OPT)

- Student must

- Submit paperwork to International Services prior
to beginning date of training - Wait for written authorization to begin training
17 Graduate vs. Undergraduate
- Graduates may begin CPT prior to being in F-1
status for one academic year if required by
department - All other requirements apply
