Should public schools be responsible for
combating popular culture?

• NO
• It is a myth that public schools dont teach
  values. Define Values. Nearly a third of
  students receive their only hot meal of the day
  in public schools. For thousands, the only hug
  they get is in public schools. Teachers spend
  personal funds to supply students with materials
  they cant get themselves in public schools.

• YES
• We should be able to rely on our schools to
  counter the worst aspects of popular culture,
  fortify students with standards, judgment, and
  character.

Every student has the right to be taught by a
teacher that knows their subject area.

• YES
• Albert Einstein could not teach physics in an
  American public school.
• One third of math teachers and two fifths of
  science teachers neither majored or minored in
  these subject areas while in college.

• NO
• Nearly half of the three million teachers in
  public schools have a masters degrees. The
  political climate is so hateful toward public
  schools, a third quit within 10 years. The
  committed stick, and must perform magnificently.

  nations in math and 16th in science.
• Compared to the rest of the industrialized world,
  our students lag seriously in critical subjects
  vital to our future.

• It is a myth that American students score lower
  than kids in almost every other country.
• Americas smart kids are as smart or smarter than
  those in any other country. Test scores have
  recovered after a hug dip due to integration of
  public education. Separate was never equal.

• Public schools are stuck with what the system
  dishes out to them, and all too often they are
  stuck with the least qualified teachers, the most
  rigid bureaucratic structures, the fewest choices
  and the shoddiest quality.

• It is tough to be a teacher today . Every
  possible social malfunction affects the
  classroomdrugs, alcohol, divorce, gangs, and
  poverty.

In Your Opinion what techniques can be used to
successfully reform public schools.

YES

• America needs solid national academic standards
  and standard based assessment.
• At minimum, every child must have the right to
  attend the public school of his choice.
• Every state needs a strong charter-school law.
• America needs to enlarge its supply of excellent
  schools.
• One good way to boost the number of knowledgeable
  teachers is to throw open the classroom door to
  men and women who are well educated but have not
  gone through programs of teacher education.

• Never let a newsletter or any other
  correspondence out of any school that doesnt
  contain at least one or more positive strokes.
• A speakers bureau is a must for civic clubs,
  chambers of commerce, ect. Civic organizations
  are the heartbeat of any community and they love
  to see and hear kids.
• Create a committee on correspondence.
