2What is a Micro-blogging?
- A new form of communication to inform and update
people on your activity. - Live information, such as what they are doing,
thinking, and experiencing. - Allow individuals to broadcast information
through brief status updates. - With their audience following them such as
friends, colleagues, and other interested people. - Examples are Twitter, Yammer, Jaiku, Present.ly,
Plurk, Identi.ca, Socialcast, and others. - Microblogging brings out a unique communication
behavior because people use micro-blogging to
share information about themselves that they
probably wont do through other communication
methods.
3What makes it different?
- Microblogging can become an important informal
communication method at work. - This could impact the way we communicate in the
business setting and improve collaborative work. - The Corporate environment needs better use of
informal communication among employees. - Informal communication is critical to
collaborative work and organizations success. - The Two classes of anticipated impacts of
micro-blogging are - Informational effects-improved opportunistic
valuable information sharing, expertise seeking,
and building and maintaining common ground among
co-workers. - Social and emotional effects-enhancing the
feeling of connectedness among co-workers.
4The Benefits of Micro-blogging
- Opportunistic valuable information sharing-
Sharing similar experiences to exchange and learn
from each others experiences. - Work related information/articles sharing-You can
learn from articles that your co-workers post
that they found insightful. This can be on work
related news and anything relevant in the
industry. - Common ground building -People replying to a
co-workers post alerting them that they read it,
and sharing their opinions. - Perceptions of others work-You can learn insight
into what someone on another team may think that
effects you and your teams work. - Broadcasting and voluntary reading-Makes it
easier for users to share information that they
probably would not do otherwise. - Simple, easy, and pervasive access-It is low cost
to share and easy to do. You can make update as
things happening and thoughts crossing minds.
Can check whenever have a moment.
5What are the major issues?
- Privacy People concerned about broadcasting
social or work information to everyone who is a
follower. - Security Worried about public seeing possible
sensitive work information on public microblogs

9About Yammer
- Connect and share with the people in your company
or organization. - Yammer is a tool for making organizations more
productive through the exchange of short frequent
answers to one simple question 'What are you
working on?' - As employees answer that question, a feed is
created in one central location enabling
co-workers to discuss ideas, post news, ask
questions, and share links and other information.
- Yammer also serves as a company directory in
which every employee has a profile and as a
knowledge base where past conversations can be
easily accessed and referenced. - The privacy of each network is ensured by
limiting access to those with a valid company
email address. Information is never shared with
third parties. - https//www.yammer.com/
