Stage ISensorimotor

• Ages birth-2 years
• They take in the world almost exclusively through
  senses and movement
• Need high physical interaction with their
  environment
• Out of sight, out of mind
• High capacity to take in and learn from stimulus

Stage IIPreoperational

• Ages 2-7 years
• Learn through interaction with environment and
  talking to people
• Vocabulary increases tremendously in this period
• Take things very literally, and do not understand
  abstract (hypothetical) reasoning
• Still think in a self-centered manner

Stage IIIConcrete Operational

• Ages 7-11 years
• Begin to think logically
• Begin to understand the perspective of others
• Develop a higher capacity for problem solving
• Have difficulty with abstract symbolism (e.g.
  God is a rock)
