PowerPoint Voice Output Communication
  • 26 Toddlers Highest Frequency Words
  • Combined with Toddlers 80 First Words
  • And More Core Words

Banajee, DiCarlo Stricklin, 2003
Gail Van Tatenhove, NLDAAC
British National Corpus, Balandin, Hill, Stuart,
Marvin, UK Nat Lit., Dolch, Ogden, Israel
2
Vocabulary
  • Gail Van Tatenhove reports that users prefer
single sheet displays to sets of pages they have
    to navigate.
  • She recommends 300 to 400 permanently available
    core words.
  • With a starter set of at least 100 core words.
  • If a user cannot access 100 words on a personal
board then supplemental boards are used.
  • Gail got very positive results using a starter
set of 100 core words with 24 individuals with
    severe cognitive disabilities.

Pixon Project Outcomes

Development Curriculum Gail M. Van Tatenhove, MS,
CCC-SLP www.vantatenhove.com
  • Tracking Outcomes
  • Additional Outcomes
  • Pixon Project Kit materials used in 4 adult
programs and 2 classrooms (severe cognitive
    disabilities)
  • Personal AAC systems P-AACS
  • January 2007 0/24 individuals had any P-AACS
  • January 2008 24/24 individuals had Pixon-based
    P-AACS
  • 22/24 had manual communication boards only
  • 2/24 had devices with matching manual
communication boards (1 Vantage, 1 ECO)
  • Made nearly a seamless transition to the Unity
    program
  • Vocabulary acquisition in 12 months
  • 2/24 over 100 core words
  • 8/24 76 - 100 core words
  • 10/24 51 - 75 core words
  • 3/24 26 - 50 core words
  • 1/24 1 - 25 core words
  • Syntactical acquisition
  • 8/24 - primarily 1-word utterances and word
    strings
  • 11/24 - consistent 2 word utterances
  • 5/24 - consistent 3 word utterances
  • Morphology acquisition
  • all beginning to mark morphology IF available on
his/her board (10 people have morphology markers)

4
Limitations
  • Visual or motor impaired users may need a
    personal board with fewer words.
  • And they are good for first time responders and
    early language practice.
  • But assumed inability to learn is a bad excuse
    for limiting vocabulary.
  • Gail makes sure that a poster with all 400 core
words goes on the wall in every class,
  • So the teacher knows which words to paraphrase
her lessons into and elicit responses from.

5
Slides with Few Words
Note on bracketed words in titles of slides that
follow e.g. 20(26) Gails 20-cell board has 26
words as some cells have 2 words e.g.
NOT/DONT. Ours are to have sound added for
speech output so each word needs own cell.
  • Based on Gail Van Tatenhoves Pixon series of
language boards, with more words from Gails
    clinical practice, and
  • 26 Highest Frequency Words that 2-3 year olds use
for 96.3 of everything they say (Banajee 2003)

Talk
  • On a VOCA we could have d, ll, m, re, s and
ve once each ready to add to pronouns
  • They dont sound right as separate items in
    PowerPoint.
  • 8 are missing from following slide, all are on
the slide after that its a space issue.
  • We wanted negatives of all helper verbs but only
room for the ones where a separate nt wouldnt
sound right cant, dont, arent, werent.
  • nt works well added to could, did, does, had,
    has, have, should and would.

Under Construction
  • The next slides are designs for more words with
  • 7 or 9 changeable non-core words on Slide 1 for
talking on a topic without navigating, and
  • A second slide for alphabet, word parts, numbers,
colours, time and date words, more verbs and
adjectives and nouns that are core.
  • Users can add slides with their own words.
  • Navigating is easier to more concrete words than
    the abstract core.

17

How it Came About
  • We narrated the PowerPoint stories we made for
    2008 International AAC Month.
  • A speaker icon appeared for each sound.
  • In PowerPoint 2007 (Windows) we noticed an option
on the Format menu is Change Picture.
  • In PowerPoint for Mac theres a button to set the
    speaker icon transparency to 100.
  • We had pictures of core words in our stories.
  • We put sounds on top of these words and swapped
the speaker icons for transparent Gifs.
