Title: Authentic Worship The Triumphal Entry
1Authentic WorshipThe Triumphal Entry
2Think About It
- How do people often react when they meet a
celebrity? - Why do we react that way?
3Authentic Worship
- Today we look at how people responded or reacted
when Jesus came into Jerusalem. - they worshiped Him, praised Him
- we will look at how we should do the same in our
everyday lives - Listen to how two men obeyed Jesus.
4Listen to how two men obeyed Jesus.
- Luke 1928-40 (NIV) After Jesus had said this, he
went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 As he
approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill
called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his
disciples, saying to them, 30 "Go to the
village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you
will find a colt tied there, which no one has
ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here.
5Listen to how two men obeyed Jesus.
- 31 If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying
it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.' " 32 Those
who were sent ahead went and found it just as he
had told them. 33 As they were untying the
colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying
the colt?" 34 They replied, "The Lord needs it."
6Worship by Our Obedience
- What were Jesus specific instructions to the two
disciples? - What other options of entering Jerusalem do you
think Jesus could have had? - What would be the significance of those options
contrasted to riding an insignificant animal such
as a donkey?
7Worship by Our Obedience
He invited two disciples to join His quest ... to
participate in this detail they were
obedient! they got to participate in something
that was unique in all history never to repeat
- What kinds of details have you forgotten when
taking a trip? - How do you suppose the detail of the
availability of the donkey might have happened? - ? Jesus was fully aware of even the tiny details
needed for His triumphal entry into Jerusalem - however it happened, He knew there would be a
young donkey waiting
8Worship by Our Obedience
- How would you have responded if two men
approached you and said that the Lord needed your
truck or your car (or your colt)? - What kinds of events/quests does God call
believers to today? - What can we do to be ready and to live in
obedience, joining God in quests that might be
unique in history?
9Listen for what the people did and consider
whether you would be willing to do so also.
- Luke 1935 38 (NIV) They brought it to Jesus,
threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on
it. 36 As he went along, people spread their
cloaks on the road. 37 When he came near the
place where the road goes down the Mount of
Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began
joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the
miracles they had seen 38 "Blessed is the king
who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in
heaven and glory in the highest!"
10Worship by Doing and Saying
- What did the people do with their cloaks, their
coats? - What might be as important to us today as a cloak
was to these people? - What does the importance of the cloak suggest
that worshippers were proclaiming about Jesus?
11Worship by Doing and Saying
- What did people shout as Jesus came into
Jerusalem? - What are some times when we eagerly praise God?
- What are some things that get in the way of
praise, things that can hinder our joyful praise? - How do we learn to praise God in spite of these
hindrances?
12Listen for objections by the Pharisees.
- Luke 1939 40 (NIV) Some of the Pharisees in
the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your
disciples!" 40 "I tell you," he replied, "if
they keep quiet, the stones will cry out."
13Jesus is Communicated to Others when We Worship
- The Pharisees told Jesus to rebuke His disciples
what reasons might they have had? - On many previous occasions, Jesus had told people
not to tell what had happened, not to share news
of a miracle. Why did He allow it to happen this
time?
14Jesus is Communicated to Others when We Worship
- What was Jesus response to the Pharisees?
- Consider these verses which state what we see in
nature (including stones) cry out that Jesus is
Lord. - Psalm 191
- Romans 118-20
15Jesus is Communicated to Others when We Worship
- What was it that made it impossible for Jesus
disciples to keep silent? - How can we find it impossible to be silent about
Jesus
16Application
- Worship is a lifestyle that can happen wherever
we are - Look for sightings of God at work all around
you - Declare your praise both privately and publicly
- Allow the Holy Spirit to prompt you to see the
worthship of God
17Application
- Consider songs that help you celebrate praise to
Jesus? Examples - Hallelujah Chorus
- Crown Him with many Crowns
- All Hail the Power
- Find recordings of these (or more contemporary)
songs to listen to - Think about the words of these songs sing them
to yourself (car, shower, etc.)
18Application
- Make a list of ways you can honor Christ this
week, based on the events recorded in our
Scripture passage - Singing his praises
- Count your many blessings in writing list
them each day - Honor Him with your financial resources
- Honor Him with the use of your time for His
ministries, His Kingdom
