Title: Orthographic Drawings
1Orthographic Drawings
2What does the word Orthographic Mean?
- Ortho 90 Degrees or right angle
- Graphic to draw or a picture
- To draw pictures 90 degrees from each other.
3The three common orthographic planes are Top,
Front, and Right Side
4Orthographic Projections
- 3 views of an object that are 90 degrees to each
other - Usually the Top, Front, and Right Side views are
used
5To get Orthographic projections based on the top,
front, and right side views, we use a special
technique that allows us to see each view
straight on.
6Transparent Cube
7If you place an object to be drawn inside of a
transparent cube, you can then project the image
of each side directly onto the face of the cube.
8Inside the cube
9When we unfold the cube
10We typically only use 3 of the six viewsTop,
Front, and Right Side

12To visualize an object without the transparent
cube, hold the object and look at it straight on
from each view Top, Front, and Right Side. Then
draw what you see.

14Another concern is the problem of figuring out
which line represents WHAT in the other
views. What follows is a way of determining how
to do this
15Each surface can be identified in each view
