DR ABC (D)
  • D DANGER Check to see if you, others or the
    victim in immediate danger.
  • R RESPONSE Response of the victim whether
    they are conscious or unconscious (Including
    C.O.W.S )
  • A AIRWAY Check whether the airway is clear of
    objects and is open.
  • B BREATHING - Check whether the victims chest
    is rising and falling, hear breathing, feel
    breath on your cheek, check if you can see signs
    of life, observe colour of skin on face.
  • C CPR perform Cardiopulmonary resuscitation
    if there are no signs of life.
  • D Defibrillation - Use defibrillator if
    available

  • D Defibrillation - Use defibrillator if
    available.
  • A defibrillator is a machine that delivers an
    electrical signal to the heart. Available in
    ambulances

RECOVERY POSITION
  • Once the victim is not in a life threatening
    situation ( breathing, pulse, away from danger )
    they may be placed in the Recovery Position
  • 1. Kneel beside the casualty
  • 2. Place farther arm at a right angle to the body
  • 3. Place nearer arm across the chest
  • 4. Lift nearer leg at the knee so it is fully
    bent upwards
  • 5. Roll the casualty away from you on to their
    side while always supporting the head and neck
  • 6. Keep the leg at right angle with the knee
    touching the ground to prevent casualty rolling
    on to their face

SCRUBBY CREEK
  • A group of friends have all been doing lots of
    jumps into Scrubby Creek.
  • Sasha screams out to the others, Hey watch
    this...I can do a flip off the edge into the
    water!
  • Cmon thenlets see it, yells Remi.
  • They have been egging each other on all day.
    Pushing each other into the water and doing
    stupid things all afternoon.
  • Even though everyone is having a great time, Lee
    is getting worried at some of the risks they are
    taking.
  • Sasha decides to do the flip but slips on take
    off , lands on the ground with a massive thud and
    falls into the water.
  • Lee and Remi rush into the creek. Sasha is not
    moving at all and does not appear to be breathing
    or showing any signs of life.

THINGS TO CONSIDER!
  • What are some of the things Lee and Remi need to
    consider when rescuing Sasha out of the water?
  • Every second counts
  • Follow the DR ABC procedure
  • Only enter the water if they can swim

SCRUBBY CREEK ACTION!
  • What you will need.
  • group of 4
  • Copy of the DR ABC checklist
  • Talk through everything ( be specific )
  • Determine who is playing the individual roles
  • a) Sasha
  • b) Lee
  • c) Remi
  • d) Observer

What would you do?
  • Take the role of either Remi, Lee, Sasha or an
    observer.
  • SASHA they are the injured person ( must remain
    unconscious )
  • LEE First Aid leader. Must describe out loud
    what steps they are taking. Take the lead in DR
    ABC on the injured person
  • REMI First Aid helper. Follows instructions and
    helps with suggestions if needed from Lee
  • OBSERVER Watch what happens and has a checklist
    to make sure that all procedures have been
    followed.

MASSIVE STACK!
  • Matt and his mates are riding their bikes on a
    path surrounding a creek. Matt tries to skid as
    close to the end of a path as possible. The first
    time he goes close but on his second attempt to
    go closer, he hits a loose bit of concrete and
    has a massive stack and ends up in the water. His
    mates laugh but soon realise he is not moving.

  • Imagine you are one of Matts friends. What might
    make the task of rescuing Matt difficult?
  • Amount of clothing he has on ( helmet )
  • (Do you jump in fully clothed or take clothes
    off?)
  • Things in the water you cant see eg. Branches,
    logs
  • Distance between you and Matt
  • Your physical limitations ( eg. Can you swim well
    enough to save him)
  • Can you handle Matts size and weight?

  • If Matt is conscious, what could you do to assist
    with a rescue while remaining on dry ground?

  • Towel
  • What else could you use?
