MATERIAL HANDLING
  • Material Handling is the movement, storage,
control and protection of materials, goods and
    products
  • Material handling equipment is used to increase
    throughput, control costs, and maximize
    productivity.
  • Everything we eat or wear, and we use has, at
some stage, been stored and handled by materials
    handling equipment.

5
FORKLIFT TRUCKS
  • FORKLIFT TRUCK - A MHE or a Powered industrial
truck used to lift and transport materials.
  • They are a prime part of any industry.
  • They are different from other MHEs.
  • They have rear wheel steering.

6
HISTORY
  • First used in 1800s as SACK TRUCKS.
  • Powered truck came into being in the early 20th
    century.
  • These trucks became popular due to the shortage
    of labour in WW-I.
  • Clark first gave the counter balanced truck in
1917, Yale produced the first electric truck in
    1925.
  • Post WW-II, Warehouses needed more maneuverable
    forklift trucks with higher demands.
  • Soon many types of trucks came into existence to
    meet these demands.

WORKING
  • Working can be understood through the four main
    systems of a forklift truck
  • Transmission System
  • Steering System
  • Hydraulic System
  • Electrical System

15
FORKLIFT PRINCIPLES
THE LEVER
  • Lever It is one of the simplest mechanical
devices. However, a lever by itself is not
effective. It must have something on to pivot.
This pivot is called a fulcrum.
  • Law of Equilibrium The effort multiplied by its
distance from the fulcrum equals the load
multiplied by its distance from the fulcrum. This
law of equilibrium is true for all classes of
    levers.

16
CLASSES OF LEVERS
17
CENTRE OF GRAVITY
  • It is the point on an object at which all of the
objects weight is concentrated. For symmetrical
loads, the center of gravity is at the middle of
    the load.

18
FORKLIFT STABILITY
  • A forklift trucks ability to stay upright while
it is in motion is its stability.
  • It is the most important aspect to avoid
    accidents.
  • The lateral stability of a truck changes
depending on how high the load is lifted to.
  • The rated lift capacity is reduced at increased
    lifting height.

19
STABILITY TRIANGLE
  • Almost all counterbalanced powered industrial
trucks have a three-point suspension system.
  • The triangle formed between points A, B, and C is
    called the Stability Triangle.
  • The truck will not tip over as long as the center
of gravity(C.G.) remains inside the triangle.

  • VERSATILE
  • EMISSIONS
  • FUEL
  • LIFESPAN
  • NOISE

29
DISADVANTAGES
  • INDOOR USE LIMITATIONS
  • ACCIDENTS ARE FATAL IN NATURE
  • INTENSIVE TRAINING FOR OPERATION
  • SPEED LIMITATION

30
LIFT TRUCK ASSOCIATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS
  • Industrial Truck Association (ITA) (North
    America)
  • Material Handling Equipment Distributors
    Association (MHEDA)
  • Fédération Européenne de la Manutention -
European Federation of Materials Handling (FEM)
  • British Industrial Truck Association (BITA)
  • Japan Industrial Vehicles Association (JIVA)
  • Korean Construction Equipment Manufacturers
    Association (KOCEMA)

31
FUTURE PROSPECT
  • Logistics is growing very fast in India
  • The new age hybrid engine driven forklift trucks
have been already designed and developed in some
    parts of the world.
  • Bright careers prospects in this field in INDIA.

32
CONCLUSION
  • Forklift trucks play a major role in the
    industries.
  • FORKLIFT TRUCKS aid the industries to attain high
    productivity and achieve cost optimization.
  • India has a bright future in material handling.
  • The knowledge about Forklift trucks is necessary.
  • Thus my intention has been to provide you with
the overview of the fundamentals of FORKLIFT
    TRUCKS
