What is Naturalism?

• The environment and instinct persuaded human
  behavior
• Naturalism is an off-shoot of Realism
• It originated in France in the late 1800s

Key Elements of Naturalism

• Naturalist believed in Survival of the Fittest
• They believed that a persons fate was determined
  by forces beyond their individual control
• There is a beast within every human being

• Emile Zola wrote Les Rougan-Macquart
• Stephen Crane wrote A Mystery of Heroism
• Theodore Dreiser wrote An American Tragedy and
  the trilogy The Financier, The Titan, and The
  Stoic.

• Man is always in a constant battle versus Nature
• Used nature to convey segments of reality
• Man is rarely successful against Nature
