The OMNIPOD
  • Is located on the child
  • Needs to be replaced every three days
  • May beep at times
  • Place the PDM near the POD to indicate why beeping

The PDM (Personal Diabetes Manager)
  • Communicates with the POD via blue tooth like
    technology
  • Only speaks to the POD it is currently married to

Checking blood sugar with the PDM
  • After entering the free style strip into the
    bottom of the PDM the Code number of the strip
    will appear
  • You can check this number by comparing it to the
    side of the strip container
  • If the numbers are different, use the up and down
    arrows to make the numbers match

  • When the droplet sign appears the PDM is ready
    for you to place blood on the strip
  • It will then calculate the childs blood sugar
    level and display the number

Blood Sugar Results
  • Below 90 child will need juice (you will need to
    press the next button and indicate not going to
    eat and then with the up and down arrows to give
    0.00 units and press enter and ok respectively)
  • If below 70 give 2 juices
  • If above 200 (you will press the next button and
    it will ask if child is going to eat now, press
    the NO button and the PDM will calculate a
    correction, then press enter, and confirm to
    administer the dose
  • Recheck all low blood sugars after 15-20 minutes
    of giving juice
  • If unsure call Nurse Nicole or childs mom

  • Enter manually

How much insulin does the child get?
  • The PDM will calculate the number of units of
    insulin to give
  • You can give the whole amount by pressing enter
    OR
  • You can split the dose by pressing extend

If you EXTEND the dose.
  • Extending the dose is done to reduce the amount
    of insulin that the child gets all at one time
    (especially if child is going to recess or PE)
  • Choose to do it by half (50)
  • Press Enter

  • The PDM will calculate the dose that needs to be
    extended for you.

Extending dose cont.
  • You will need to choose how long you want to
    extend the dose
  • You can choose from ½ hour up to 2 hours.
  • 1 hour is usually sufficient
  • Press enter

Confirming the dose
  • In order to give a dose you will have to confirm
    the dose and at that moment the PDM needs to be
    close to the POD and you will hear a beep to
    indicate the communication was successful

Delivering the dose
  • After successful communication the child can go
    back to doing his work and the PDM can be put away

Suspending the insulin administration.
  • If childs blood sugar is real low the insulin
    that is delivered continuously (the basal rate)
    may need to be stopped.
  • Highlight Suspend on the home menu screen and
    press enter
  • This will also suspend any other insulin delivery

  • It will ask you how long you wish to suspend the
    dose
  • You will have the option of ½ hour to 2 hours max
    with the up and down arrow buttons, then press
    enter
  • Before resuming you can recheck childs blood
    sugar and see if suspension needs to continue for
    longer or it is okay to resume insulin
    administration

  • You must confirm for the suspension to take place
  • Place PDM near POD and you will hear a beep to
    indicate successful communication
