Please copy the following directions for the
prewriting aspect of your essay into the Writing
Process section of your notebook.

Writing Situation

• We know that symbols are an everyday part of our
  lives, as well as a part of stories we read and
  the movies we watch. A symbol can be an object,
  a person, a place, or an action that has meaning
  within itself and also stands for something
  beyond itself, like an idea or a feeling. Some
  symbols are universal, called archetypes, whereas
  other symbols may have a sexual connation. These
  are called Freudian symbols. Other symbols are
  contexual because they only have meaning within a
  certain setting. Finally, there are just plain
  symbols that dont fall into any of these
  categories, yet their meaning is clearly evident
  to all.

Directions for Prewriting

• Review your Cornell notes from The Fall of the
  House of Usher. Then, divide a piece of
  notebook paper into three columns labeled
  Archetypal, Freudian, and Contextual. Next, use
  your notes to help you locate at least twelve
  symbols from the story and directly cite those
  examples in the appropriate column in MLA format.
