    understanding of reality constructed by words

  • signifier does not resemble the signified but is
    fundamentally arbitrary or purely conventional
  • linguistic signs clearly arbitrary symbolic
  • tree doesnt look or sound like a tree
  • Other symbolic signs

  • but photo of cat looks like cat iconic sign -
    signifier resembles referent
  • Still understand them through convention
  • Learn to read iconic signs too

Indexical Signs
  • Somewhat difficult concept
  • signifier is not arbitrary but is directly
    connected in some way (physically or causally) to
    the signified
