Nehemiah 13

Nehemiah 13
3
No Ammonite or Moabite
  • (Neh 131 NKJV) On that day they read from the
Book of Moses in the hearing of the people, and
in it was found written that no Ammonite or
Moabite should ever come into the assembly of
    God,

4
Because of Balaam
  • (Neh 132 NKJV) because they had not met the
children of Israel with bread and water, but
hired Balaam against them to curse them. However,
our God turned the curse into a blessing.

5
From Deuteronomy
  • (Deu 233-6 NKJV) "An Ammonite or Moabite shall
not enter the assembly of the LORD even to the
tenth generation none of his descendants shall
enter the assembly of the LORD forever, 4
"because they did not meet you with bread and
water on the road when you came out of Egypt, and
because they hired against you Balaam the son of
Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you.

6
From Deuteronomy
  • (Deu 233-6 NKJV). 5 "Nevertheless the LORD
your God would not listen to Balaam, but the LORD
your God turned the curse into a blessing for
you, because the LORD your God loves you. 6
"You shall not seek their peace nor their
    prosperity all your days forever.

7
The mixed multitude
  • (Neh 133 NKJV) So it was, when they had heard
the Law, that they separated all the mixed
    multitude from Israel.

8
Pagan wives were divorced
  • A separation like that made by Ezra, some 20
years previously Ezra 1015-44, seems to be
intended. The pagan wives were divorced and sent
back, with their offspring, to their own
    countries.

9
Eliashib was allied with Tobiah.
  • (Neh 134 NKJV) Now before this, Eliashib the
priest, having authority over the storerooms of
the house of our God, was allied with Tobiah.

10
Eliashib the (high) priest
  • The relations of Eliashib, the high priest
Neh_31, with Tobiah and Sanballat will account
for the absence of any reference to him either in
Neh. 810, or in Neh. 1227-
  • --Albert Barnes
  • How does Barnes know he was high priest?

11
Eliashib was high priest
  • (Neh 31 NKJV) Then Eliashib the high priest
rose up with his brethren the priests and built
the Sheep Gate they consecrated it and hung its
doors. They built as far as the Tower of the
Hundred, and consecrated it, then as far as the
    Tower of Hananel.

12
Eliashib was allied with Tobiah.
  • (Neh 134 NKJV) Now before this, Eliashib the
priest, having authority over the storerooms of
the house of our God, was allied with Tobiah.
  • And what does allied mean in this case?

13
Allied
  • Allied - i. e, connected by marriage. Tobiah
was married to a Jewess Neh_618, who may have
been a relation of Eliashib and his son Johanan
was married to another Neh_618, of whom the same
    may be said.
  • -- Albert Barnes

14
Tobiah was married to a Jewess
  • (Neh 617-18 NKJV) Also in those days the nobles
of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the
letters of Tobiah came to them. 18 For many in
Judah were pledged to him, because he was the
son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his
son Jehohanan had married the daughter of
    Meshullam the son of Berechiah.

15
Eliashib was allied unto Tobiah
  • Eliashib the priest ... was allied unto Tobiah
This person was the high priest (Neh_1328 also
Neh_31), who, by virtue of his dignified office,
had the superintendence and control of the
apartments attached to the temple. The laxity of
his principles, as well as of his practice, is
sufficiently apparent from his contracting a
family connection with so notorious an enemy of
    Israel as Tobiah.

16
Eliashib was allied unto Tobiah
  • But his obsequious attentions had carried him
much farther for to accommodate so important a
person as Tobiah on his occasional visits to
Jerusalem, Eliashib had provided him a splendid
    apartment in the temple.

17
Converting the holy to the common
  • (Neh 135 NKJV) And he had prepared for him a
large room, where previously they had stored the
grain offerings, the frankincense, the articles,
the tithes of grain, the new wine and oil, which
were commanded to be given to the Levites and
singers and gatekeepers, and the offerings for
    the priests.

18
Eliashib was allied unto Tobiah
  • The introduction of so gross an impropriety can
be accounted for in no other way than by
supposing that in the absence of the priests and
the cessation of the services, the temple was
regarded as a common public building, which
might, in the circumstances, be appropriated as a
    palatial residence.

19
What Happens when Nehemiah is gone?
  • (Neh 136 NKJV) But during all this I was not in
Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of
Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the
king. Then after certain days I obtained leave
    from the king,

20
Now the truth is found out!
  • (Neh 137 NKJV) and I came to Jerusalem and
discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for
Tobiah, in preparing a room for him in the courts
    of the house of God.

21
Tobiah is thrown out!
  • (Neh 138 NKJV) And it grieved me bitterly
therefore I threw all the household goods of
    Tobiah out of the room.

22
Clean and Restore the rooms
  • (Neh 139 NKJV) Then I commanded them to cleanse
the rooms and I brought back into them the
articles of the house of God, with the grain
    offering and the frankincense.

23
Levites Singers not Paid
  • (Neh 1310 NKJV) I also realized that the
portions for the Levites had not been given them
for each of the Levites and the singers who did
the work had gone back to his field.

24
Straightening out the rulers
  • (Neh 1311 NKJV) So I contended with the rulers,
and said, "Why is the house of God forsaken?" And
I gathered them together and set them in their
    place.

25
Things turn around
  • (Neh 1312 NKJV) Then all Judah brought the
tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil
    to the storehouse.

26
Appointing faithful Stewards
  • (Neh 1313 NKJV) And I appointed as treasurers
over the storehouse Shelemiah the priest and
Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah
and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the
son of Mattaniah for they were considered
faithful, and their task was to distribute to
    their brethren.

27
God, Remember Nehemiah!
  • (Neh 1314 NKJV) Remember me, O my God,
concerning this, and do not wipe out my good
deeds that I have done for the house of my God,
    and for its services!

28
Working on the Sabbath
  • (Neh 1315 NKJV) In those days I saw people in
Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and
bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with
wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens,
which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath
day. And I warned them about the day on which
    they were selling provisions.

29
Selling on the Sabbath Day
  • (Neh 1316 NKJV) Men of Tyre dwelt there also,
who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and
sold them on the Sabbath to the children of
    Judah, and in Jerusalem.

30
You are Doing Evil
  • (Neh 1317 NKJV) Then I contended with the
nobles of Judah, and said to them, "What evil
thing is this that you do, by which you profane
    the Sabbath day?

31
Dont you ever learn?
  • (Neh 1318 NKJV) "Did not your fathers do thus,
and did not our God bring all this disaster on us
and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on
    Israel by profaning the Sabbath."

32
Nehemiah posted Guards for enforcement
  • (Neh 1319 NKJV) So it was, at the gates of
Jerusalem, as it began to be dark before the
Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut,
and charged that they must not be opened till
after the Sabbath. Then I posted some of my
servants at the gates, so that no burdens would
be brought in on the Sabbath day.

33
Edging up
  • (Neh 1320 NKJV) Now the merchants and sellers
of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem
    once or twice.

34
Shut them down!
  • On the merchants and various dealers finding
admission denied them, they set up booths outside
the walls, in hopes of still driving a traffic
with the peasantry but the governor threatened,
if they continued, to adopt violent measures for
their removal. For this purpose a body of Levites
was stationed as sentinels at the gate, with
    discretionary powers to protect the
    sanctification of the Sabbath. JFB

35
Step 1 A warning
  • (Neh 1321 NKJV) Then I warned them, and said to
them, "Why do you spend the night around the
wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on
you!" From that time on they came no more on the
    Sabbath.

36
Levites to be Guards
  • (Neh 1322 NKJV) And I commanded the Levites
that they should cleanse themselves, and that
they should go and guard the gates, to sanctify
the Sabbath day. Remember me, O my God,
concerning this also, and spare me according to
    the greatness of Your mercy!

37
More Foreign Marriages
  • (Neh 1323-24 NKJV) In those days I also saw
Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and
Moab. 24 And half of their children spoke the
language of Ashdod, and could not speak the
language of Judah, but spoke according to the
language of one or the other people.

38
Sounds like a physical fight!
  • (Neh 1325 NKJV) So I contended with them and
cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out
their hair, and made them swear by God, saying,
"You shall not give your daughters as wives to
their sons, nor take their daughters for your
    sons or yourselves.

39
Dont you ever Learn?
  • (Neh 1326-27 NKJV) "Did not Solomon king of
Israel sin by these things? Yet among many
nations there was no king like him, who was
beloved of his God and God made him king over
all Israel. Nevertheless pagan women caused even
him to sin. 27 "Should we then hear of your
doing all this great evil, transgressing against
our God by marrying pagan women?"

40
A story we have already mentioned
  • (Neh 1328-29 NKJV) And one of the sons of
Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was
a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite therefore
I drove him from me. 29 Remember them, O my
God, because they have defiled the priesthood and
the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites.

41
I cleansed them of everything pagan.
  • (Neh 1330 NKJV) Thus I cleansed them of
everything pagan. I also assigned duties to the
priests and the Levites, each to his service, 31
and to bringing the wood offering and the
    firstfruits at appointed times.

42
Remember me, O my God, for good!
  • (Neh 1331 NKJV) . . . Remember me, O my God,
    for good!

43
Remember me, O my God, for good!
  • (Neh 1331 NKJV) . . . Remember me, O my God,
    for good!
