When you ask if a book is fiction or nonfiction,

• You are talking about GENRE.
• Genre is a French word that means dividing
  reading materials into different categories.
  There are about 8 genres that we talk about, but
  for now we will concentrate on the major division.

• Examples Cinderella, How to Eat Fried Worms, The
  Time Hackers

Nonfiction

• Contains facts
• True, Can be proven
• Examples Our Social Studies Textbook, Abe
  Lincoln the Young Years, a magazine article about
  LeBron James

Why do you need to know the difference between
fiction and nonfiction?

• You need to know if you can rely or trust the
  information.
• If I read a book about an amazing dog who can
  talk, I need to know if this is a made up story
  or if this is a new kind of dog!
