skills and technologies associated with the
    optimal management of decommissioning,
    decontamination reutilization of nuclear and
    formerly nuclear installations, materials,

DDR Division Membership, Breakdown by Industry
9
Snapshot of DDRMembership (Year End 2001)
  • December 2001membership 1321
  • Down 2 (29) from December 2000 membership of
    1350
  • This includes 12 of the ANS December 2001
    membership of 10849

  • 116 elected DDR (10.5 of 110)
  • 8.5 gross gain to Division
  • Members lost during 2001
  • 145

10
DDR Budget History
11
Issues
  • DD opportunities reduced in the near term
  • Successful plant life extensions
  • Improved economics of operating plants
  • Lower priority given to DD by DOE-EM
  • Too many DD related meetings
  • Reduced attendance at Topical/Executive
    Conferences
  • One Topical meeting had to be cancelled
  • Reduced member interest and income

12
Goals
  • Prepare technical position papers on major issues
  • Develop DD standards on a planned schedule
  • Integrate DD activities within the overall
    nuclear power systems development framework
  • Develop mechanism for formal sharing of
    experiences/lessons learned between US
    (Commercial and Government) and International
    activities

13
DD Issues to be Addressed
  1. Technical
  2. Financial
  • DD technologies
  • Characterization and survey methods/approvals
  • Site release criteria/process
  • Remote monitoring (S/M)
  • Specific materials issues (e.g., activated
    concrete)
  • Specific site issues
  • DD standards
  • Spent fuel disposition
  • Low level radioactive waste disposal
  • DD cost estimates/validation
  • Major cost drivers
  • Tax issues with DD fund
  • DOC-financial considerations

15
Summary of DD Activities Worldwide
  • Significant amount of DD activities in progress
  • Initial sets of commercial nuclear plants
    undergoing DD.
  • Over 50 of all research reactors worldwide are
    shutdown. Some reactors have been
    decommissioned.
  • Many non-power reactors are also in DD across
    the world.
  • Resource availability for DD is major issue for
    research reactors worldwide (financial and
    technical)

16
Recent DDR Achievements
  • Updated website (http//ddrd.ans.org/)
  • Significantly enhanced Division newsletter
  • Full version on website brief mailer
  • Current issue is 30 pages long
  • Color photographs of facilities and equipment

  • Embedded topical

Plans to have future joint meeting with NEI, EPRI
in addition to other ANS Divisions (e.g. FCWMD)
18
Future Outlook
  • DD landscape is changing
  • Commercial DD activity has started to decrease
    other elements should remain steady
  • In order to sustain vitality, DDR Division will
    need to
  • Place greater emphasis on re-utilization and
    re-licensing
  • Integrate close with overall nuclear development
  • Promote closer links between commercial/government
    / international DD activities
  • Co-sponsor significant topical meetings annually
    with other ANS divisions
