Title: Interpersonal Communication
1Interpersonal Communication
- A model to demonstrate how meaning is created
between people
By Eileen Scheckle PE Technikon
2Introduction
- Humans are unique in their ability to
communicate. This communication has developed to
very refined and subtle levels. To understand
these subtleties it is necessary to examine the
following model.
3The communication process includes a number of
elements...
Message
Encoding
Decoding
Medium (which carries the message)
Sender
Audience
Feedback
4 The elements in the process are
- sender - a person who has an idea
to communicate
- encoding - changing an idea into a
concrete and accessible form
- message - the content to be conveyed
5And,
- decoding - making sense of the message
- audience - the receiver of the message
- feedback - any response or reaction to the
message
6And,
television
radio
letters
posters
the medium
which could take the form of
reports
face to face
and, computers
7Communication depends on
the successful encoding and decoding of the
message.
For example
I like fish
8could mean,
live fish swimming in the sea,
or,
MENU
a sea-food menu.
9So, before communicating, stop and consider,
who is the audience?
what code will the audience understand?
what is the most appropriate medium to use?
10Once you have answered these questions, then...
youre ready to go and communicate effectively
and efficiently.
