    effects of high risk drinking
  • Define standard alcohol drink.
  • What is Responsible Drinking
  • Preventing problems associated with drinking
  • Knowledge about the way a human body deals with
    alcohol
  • Understand the meaning of BAC

8
What is Blood Alcohol Content (BAC)?
  • Blood Alcohol Content or Concentration (BAC) -
The amount of alcohol present in a 100 milliliter
    (mL) volume of blood.
  • The BAC is related to the users
  • Body Weight
  • Metabolism
  • Drinking Speed

9
Effects of Alcohol and BAC
BAC
Effects
  • No loss of coordination, slight euphoria and loss
of shyness. Depressant effects are not apparent.
  • Feeling of well-being, relaxation, euphoria, and
lower inhibitions. Minor impairment of reasoning
and memory. .05 is the legal limit on duty in the
    U.S. Army.
  • Slight impairment of balance, speech, vision, and
reaction time. Judgment and self-control are
reduced, caution and reason are impaired. In most
states the legal limit is .08.
  • Significant impairment of motor coordination and
loss of good judgment. Speech is slurred and
balance, vision, reaction time, and hearing are
impaired. It is illegal in all states to operate
a motor vehicle at this stage.

Effects of Alcohol and BAC
BAC
Effects
.13 - .15
  • Gross motor impairment and lack of physical
control. Blurred vision and serious loss of
balance. Euphoria is reduced and dysphoria
    (anxiety, restlessness) begins to appear.
  • Dysphoria predominates, nausea begins to appear.
The drinker appears to be a sloppy drunk.
  • Needs assistance in walking total mental
confusion. Dysphoria with nausea and some
    vomiting.
  • Loss of consciousness.
  • Coma, and possible death due to respiratory
    arrest.

Ingestion of Alcohol
  • Alcohol can be inhaled, injected, absorbed
through mucus membranes or drank. By far
drinking is the most common mode of ingestion.
  • Although some (about 20) of alcohol is absorbed
in the stomach the majority is absorbed in the
    small intestine.
  • Once absorbed into the blood stream, alcohol
quickly travels to all cells of the body
    including the brain.

12
Elimination of Alcohol
  • As soon as the alcohol gets into the body, the
body begins working to get rid of it.
  • Only about 2-10 is expelled directly from the
body through breath, urine, sweat, etc..

13
Elimination of Alcohol
  • The body eliminates most by chemically breaking
    it down.
  • The liver is primarily responsible for chemically
breaking down alcohol or metabolizing it.
  • On average the liver can eliminate approximately
.012 to .020 of your BAC per hour depending on
    your metabolism rate.

14
Normal BAL Equation
  • Male BAL rises .02-.025 per drink
  • Female BAL rises .028-.033 per drink
  • Metabolism takes one hour per drink for males and
2 hours per drink for females
  • Legal intoxication is defined by BAL
  • Functional intoxication is determined by
    Tolerance

15
Metabolism
  • How can we speed up the process? We
    cant speed it up.
  • Drinking Coffee Wide awake drunk
  • Cold Shower Wet, clean drunk
  • Exercise Tired, sweaty, smelly drunk
  • Only Time Burns Alcohol !!!

16
Signs of Physical Impairment
  • Slurred Speech
  • Staggering
  • Nausea/Vomiting
  • Slow Reactions
  • Blurred Vision
  • Impaired Motor Skills
  • Unconsciousness
  • Unexpected Reactions
  • Dialted Pupils
  • Dizziness
  • Extreme Emotions
  • Loss of Inhibitions
  • Aggressive Behavior
  • Blackouts

17
Long Term Effects
  • Vitamin Deficiencies
  • Skin Problems
  • Loss of Muscle Tissue
  • Sexual Impotence
  • Stomach Damage
  • Small Intestine Damage
  • Loss of Feeling in Hands and/or Feet
  • Pregnancy Complications
  • Liver Cirrhosis/Cancer
  • Heart Disorders
  • Blood Disorders
  • Lung Disease
  • Brain Damage
  • Death

18
Physiological aspects of alcohol
  • Black Out NOT Passing Out
  • Blackout is alcohol induced amnesia Individual
    is still functioning

19
Binge Drinking
The practice is commonly called "binge drinking."
For a man that means five or more drinks at one
sitting, for a woman four or more drinks. That's
the level of alcohol consumption known to lead to
problems, including fights, car accidents,
property damage, and sexual assaults.
20
High Risk Group
  • 500,000 students between 18 and 24
unintentionally injured each year under the
    influence of alcohol.
  • More than 600,000 students are assaulted by
    another student who's been drinking.
  • An estimated 400,000 students a year have
    unprotected sex while drinking.
  • Seventy thousand are victims of date rape.
  • And more than 100,000 say they were too drunk to
know whether the sex they had was consensual.

21
Alcohol Poisoning
  • Results from drinking more alcohol than the liver
    can metabolize
  • Brain and body functions stop

22
What to Do If You Suspect Alcohol Poisoning
  • If You Suspect Alcohol Poisoning
  • Call For Help!!! 119 for Italy, 911 for USA,
    Staff Duty, MPs,, Ambulance, etc.).

drugs or medications the person may have taken.
  • DO NOT try to give the person anything to eat or
  • DO NOT put the person in a cold shower. They
could drown, pass out or go into shock.
