- Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical
procedure - Scrubs, gowns, and gloves
- Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies,
equipment, and medications/solutions needed for
procedure - Performs appropriate counts with circulator prior
to the operation and before incision is closed

- Gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants
- Helps in draping sterile field
- Passes instruments, etc., to surgeon during
procedure - Maintains highest standard of sterile technique
during procedure - Prepares sterile dressings

- Surgical Technology is Exciting and rewarding
39- What types of patients and diseases may I
encounter?
40- Many surgical patients can be quite ill
- Surgical Technologists may be exposed to many
different types of diseases such as AIDS and
tuberculosis. - However! Students enrolled in the program learn
safety precautions to protect themselves from
contracting a disease.
41- Will I actually be required to touch patients?

44 45- Is there a great deal of physical work associated
with this field?
46- Yes! Patients must be positioned for surgery so
this may require lifting and moving by the
surgical technologist. - The surgical technologist will also be operating
heavy equipment (microscopes, video towers) that

walking.

- First semester classes are 900 a.m. until
100p.m. M,T,W,Th and 200-300 p.m. W. - Second semester, clinicals are scheduled for 630
a.m. T,Th, with classes 800 a.m.-230 p.m.,
M,W,F. - Third semester, students are in class Monday from
8-5 and are in clinicals for 33 hours, T,W,TH, F. - Students usually devote 40 hours per week each
semester to their education in Surgical
Technology.

Below 75, F. - Students MUST maintain a MINIMUM grade point

coursework. Below 80 is considered unacceptable
clinical performance.
