Lets Review
3
  • Good readers summarize. As they read, they pause
to sum up the important ideas or events.
  • This helps them remember the information.
  • As you read a story, note the main events.
  • After you read, ask yourself what the main events
were and in what order they occurred.

4
Authors Purpose
  • The authors purpose is the reason or reasons the
    author has for writing.
  • An author may write to persuade, to inform, to
entertain, or to express ideas and feelings.

An author may have more than one purpose within
a story. You will often be asked question about
why an author includes what he or she does in a
story.
5
Sequence
  •  Sequence means the order in which    things
    happen.
  • Dates, times, and clue words such as first, then,
next, and last can help you understand the order
    of events.
  • Sometimes two or more events happen at    the
same time. Words such as meanwhile and during can
    show this.

  • Here is a sequence question you had on your test
a few weeks ago. Notice the word before. Before
is a clue word for a sequence question.
  • What happened before Opal found Winn-Dixie?
  • She took her dog to the library.
  • Miss Franny told her a bear story.
  • She moved to Naomi, Florida.
  • She made a new friend.

If you think about the order of the story,
you realize that Opal moved to Naomi before she
found Winn-Dixie and before the other events from
the story took place.
7
This question was a little tough because it
wasnt written down exactly in the story. You
had to think about what happened at the same time
Amanda walked in.
  • Here is a sequence question you had on your test
a few weeks ago. Notice the clue phrase at the
    same time.
  • What happened at the same time Amanda walked
    into the library?
  • Winn-Dixie barked at Amanda.
  • Amanda thought she saw a bear.
  • Miss Franny and Opal became friends.
