GLOVES
  • Examination gloves - nonsterile latex or vinyl
    exam gloves are used for procedures that do not
    require sterility
  • they should be discarded after use with each
    patient
  • Sterile gloves - used for invasive procedures
  • they are also should be discarded after each
    patient

  • Utility gloves - used for cleaning procedures -
    they may be decontaminated and reused

GUIDELINES FOR USING GLOVES
  • Wash hands before and after using gloves-remove
    all jewelry to avoid tearing gloves
  • Use correct size - make sure they are free of
    holes and tears
  • Change gloves as soon as possible following
    contamination

  • When removing gloves, avoid skin contact -
    demonstrate correct removal
  • If you are allergic to gloves your employer
    provides - they must provide you with
    hypoallergenic gloves, glove liners, powder less
    gloves, or similar alternatives

PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR
  • Should be worn whenever there is a chance of
    splashes, spatters, or sprays
  • Face masks - cover the mouth and nose-should be
    discarded after each patient or when they become
    wet
  • Protective eyewear - shields the eyes. Regular
    glasses not enough

  • Worn when splashes of infectious materials are
    anticipated.
  • Long-sleeve uniform
  • Lab coat
  • Disposable gowns
