6Mining is a huge industry in Australia. Both
open-cut mining and underground mining are
common. Most of the coal and iron ore mined in
Australia is exported to Japan.
- Australia has only 6.1 of arable land yet 3.6
of the workforce work on the land. Australias
land lends itself to the production of wheat and
small crops as well as grazing land for sheep and
cattle.
7Australia's Past
- Aboriginals arrived on the continent from
Southeast Asia about 40,000 years before the
first Europeans discovered Australia. - Captain James Cook claimed the land for Britain
in 1770. - In 1788 the first fleet of convicts landed near
present- day Sydney to settle this vast
continent. - Six colonies were created and these federated and
became the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. - Australia has supported Britain and the United
States in all major world conflicts and has
contributed to world relief efforts. -
8Captain James Cook discovered and claimed
Australia for the British in 1770. The first
Fleet of convicts arrived at Botany Bay on the
26th of January 1788 to settle the country.
- Aboriginals were the first known inhabitants
of Australia. Today, many are assimilated into
the Australian culture. Others live on reserved
land in the center of Australia. -

- Australia is famous for its animals. Nowhere else
in the world can you see koalas and kangaroos in
the wild. - 2. Australian foods are also deliciously unique.
Traditional desserts include lamingtons, pavlova,
and a wide selection of tropical fruits. - 3. Sports are a popular pastime with many being
played all-year-round. Popular sports include
cricket, rugby, tennis and swimming. -
