3Procedures Entering Exiting
- Enter through Upper Learning Center, Lower
Learning Center, and Student Center doors - Sign in on the sheets by the door
- ULC door and LLC front entrance doors are for
exiting at the end of the period. - To go between the library and the cafeteria
during class periods, use the Student Center exit
doors. This is the only door to use for coming
and going during class periods.

5Checking Out Materials
- Use your student ID card to check out library
materials on either floor. Books and magazines
have a three-week loan period. - Return materials in the book slot at the LLC
circulation desk or the return depositories in
the hallways near LLC and ULC doors. - Magazine back issues can be requested at the LLC
circulation desk
6Learning Expectations
- ULC is for classes and quiet study
- Group work belongs downstairs
- Keep voices as quiet as possible
- Show respect and consideration for fellow
students and library staff - Socializing belongs in the cafeteria

- Use materials properly with care
- Consume no food or beverage
- Bring in no computer games, audio CDs, or
headphones - Follow established learning center procedures in

- Check the full text box to make sure to get the
whole article. - Make sure key word search is used on the subject
line of the search engine and not on the author
or title line. - Always check the article length and do a print
preview before printing.

25Know It Now 24 x 7 and Homework Now
- Starting mid-September, all Ohio public libraries
will offer these two free services. - Know It Now 24x7 allows you to get help from a
reference librarian, via online chat. They can
answer factual questions or point the patron to
available resources. - Tutor.com allows students to get homework and
research help, seven days a week, from 2 p.m. to
10 p.m.

- Millions of resources are available from member
libraries. - Items requested are shipped free to the library
of your choice. - Mentor Public Library is NOT a member, but there
are close members Madison, Willowick,
Willoughby-Eastlake, Fairport Harbor, Kirtland,
and Euclid. - You can get a library card for those libraries
even if you do not live in those towns!

- Databases include information from magazines
- Theres no editor reviewing most web sites.
- Databases are created with education in mind.
- Web sites are created by authors with many
motives. - Items in the database were reviewed by teachers.
- No one polices the Internet for misinformation or
plagiarism.

- Use quotes to search exact phrases, like cancer
cells - Instead of quotes, you can also improve your
search by using or and, like cancercells. - Excluding words can help too. If you want to
find historic information on pirates, use not
or the minus symbol. For example pirates not
movie not Caribbean - Use combinations of tools to search. Like
pirateshistory-movie-Pittsburgh

- Search using a Webquest.
- Use your search engine. Enter your topic into the
search box add the word webquest. - Use kids search engines for basic
- information Ask Jeeves for Kids, Kids Click, or
Yahooligans. - Limit your searches to just .edu, .org, or .gov
sites. Use Search Edu. - Use online encyclopedias.

- Check to see if contact info, sources cited, date
of last update, and cited sources are listed. - See if there is an about page.
- Consider the motives of the author. Why do you
think s/he made this page? Is it for students? - Pay attention to the web address ending.

- Notice the warning signs bad spelling,
emotional writing, exclamation points and caps. - When in doubt, ask questions. Could you find the
same information on other sites or in other
sources? Never rely on just one source.
