- Designed as an Air Defense Artillery System
- Provides short range protection from cruise
missiles, fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and
UAVs - Currently deployed overseas, and positioned
around the Pentagon, in preparation for future
terrorist attacks.
10Upgrades, Modifications, and Limitations
- In Iraq, the M1097 is used for convoy protection.
The assault capabilities of the .50 caliber
limit the M1097 to forward only engagement. - Removal of one missile pod, and moving the .50
caliber to its position allows for 360
engagement

- VMIs new Commandant of Cadets, COL Trumps, is a
retired Air Defense Artillery Officer, and most
likely has experience with the M1097. - COL Trumps also worked for Raytheon, who produces
the weapons system on the M1097.
