12Surface Preparation
- Improperly Cleaned Surfaces are Unacceptable
because they limit or interfere with paint
adhesion. - Meticulous cleaning prior to pretreatment and
painting is of prime importance in obtaining a
satisfactory coating meeting MIL-DTL-53072C
Specifications. - SSPC-SP1 Must be Followed in order to obtain any
SSPC Cleaning Specification in order to Pass QC
Inspection
13SSPC-SP1 No. 1 PRIOR TO BLAST CLEANING
- Cleaners must be used prior to abrasive blasting
or mechanical cleaning as stated in TT-C-490 - Remove heavy oil or grease first by scraper.
- Spray the surface with Hurrisafe.
- Rinse thoroughly with water
- Allow the surface to dry completely
- Perform a Water Break Test as Specified in
MIL-DTL-53072C, Section 4.2.3.1.
14SSPC-SP1 No. 1 PRIOR TO BLAST CLEANING
Areas Not Reached During Blast Cleaning
- Dilute Hurrisafe 21 with Water in a Trigger
Spray Bottle. - Spray Area to be Cleaned
- Wipe Sprayed Area Dry with a Clean Dry Cloth to
Remove the Dissolved Contaminants and Dry the
Surface. - For Areas Where A Dry Cloth Can Not Reach. Use
Compressed Air to Remove the Dissolved
Contaminants and Dry the Surface.
15Pretreatment Should Begin Within Four (4) Hours
After Cleaning OrA Water Break Test Must Be
Performed to Determine if The Cleaning Process
Must Be Repeated

6, 7, etc. After Blast Cleaning
Use Hurrisafe in a Wipe-On Wipe-Off Process
- After Blast-Cleaning to Remove Any Remnants of
the Blast Media or Dust from the Surface. - After Treatment to Remove Rust, Weld Spatter
and Other Inorganic Contaminants - After the Cleaned Surface has Sat For Four (4) or
more Hours and Accumulated Air Dust and
Contaminants.

Wipe-On Wipe-Off Process Prior to Pretreatment.
- Dip a clean, lint free cloth into Hurrisafe
diluted 21 with water. - Wring the cloth out so that it is saturated, but
not dripping. - Wipe a small area at a time to remove dust and
air - contaminants
- Wipe the same area dry with a clean dry cloth to
remove all the Contaminants and insure the
surface is dry and ready for pretreatment.
