Meaning of Richter Scale
  • All earthquakes are compared to a zero-level
    earthquake whose seismographic reading measures
    .001 mm at a distance of 100 km from the
    epicenter.
  • A magnitude of 1 means that the intensity is 10
    times a zero-level quake.
  • A magnitude of 2 means the intensity is 100 times
    a zero-level quake or 102.
