3 What is Occupational Therapy?
- Occupational therapy aims to bring about change
to improve an individuals quality of life
through the use of graded occupation - Occupational therapists work with individuals
with physical and /or mental health problems,
learning disabilities or social needs usually
encountering a mixture of these. - When someone has had an illness or disability and
they are unable to carry out activities or
occupations, the occupational therapist will work
with them to try and restore this, through the
use of purposeful and meaningful activities

- Approximately 40 students in each year
- College leavers and mature students
- Shared learning with Diagnostic Radiography and
Physiotherapy students - Students are supported by a team of 11 teaching

9Learning Teaching
- A modular programme, combining University modules
with practice placements in around Teesside but
extending up to Northumberland. - Year 3 provides the student with the opportunity
to use Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in a role
emerging placement setting. Students will be
supported to negotiate their own role emerging
placement which will last for a total of four
weeks.Â

- Occupational Therapy Professional Practice (20
credits) - key transferable skills and essential
practice skills. - Occupational Being inc Practice Placement 1 (40
credits) - module introduces the student to
information from the contributory sciences of
anatomy, physiology, psychology and sociology. - Promoting Independent Lives inc Practice
Placement 2 (20 credits) - introduces students to
the occupational therapy process . - Principles of Occupational Therapy (40 credits) -
introduces students to the core concepts and
philosophies of occupational therapy. - Building Evidence for Occupational Therapy (20
credits) - an introduction to Higher Education
key skills.

- YEAR 2
- Occupation inc Practice Placement 3 (20
credits) Term 1 - enable students to gain the
fundamental resources in order to use occupation
in the clinical context - Practice Placement 4 (40 credits) Term 2/Term 3
engages the student in the occupational therapy
process in a practice setting - Occupational Therapy Process (40 credits) -
enable students to explore the impact of illness,
disability or trauma for people with physical,
mental and social impairments and learning
disabilities on occupational performance. - Utilising Evidence for Occupational Therapy (20
credits) - aims to enable students to utilise
appropriate evidence for occupational therapy
practice

- YEAR 3
- Final Placement (40 credits) Term 1 - provides
the student with the opportunity to use Evidence
Based Practice (EBP) for health and social care
needs to establish a role for occupational
therapists. - Option Module (10 credits) Term 1
- Contemporary Issues for Occupational Therapy (10
credits) Term 1 is designed to facilitate an
understanding and appreciation of the relevant
contemporary issues pertaining to occupational
therapy. - Meeting the Challenge for Occupational Therapy
Practice (20 credits) Term 2/Term 3 - enable the
student to further develop their non-clinical
professional skills and insight to prepare them
for their first graduate role and to support them
in lifelong learning. - Occupational Therapy Final Project (40 credits)

- All students develop a portfolio to reflect their
progress and development over the years. - Feeds into the portfolio used by graduate
occupational therapists when starting work in the
local area

teaching team to respond to student issues
